Toledoan, 92, mistakenly shoots officer(OH)
toledoblade.com ^ | 6 July, 2012 | TAYLOR DUNGJEN

Posted on 07/14/2012 5:22:21 AM PDT by marktwain

Toledo police Lt. Randy Pepitone wanted to make sure Annie Huddleston was all right inside her central Toledo home.

Ms. Huddleston thought the man outside prying open her front door lock Thursday was a burglar.

Just as Lieutenant Pepitone was opening the door, Ms. Huddleston, 92, steadied in her hand her late husband's .357 Magnum revolver, and pulled the trigger just once.

The bullet blasted through a wall hitting the 54-year-old lieutenant in the side of the head.

"All of a sudden there was a loud explosion right next to my ear and I went down," the lieutenant said. "I could taste the blood, I saw it dripping on the porch, and then saw the bullet hole."

The lieutenant said he knew the wound was superficial so he crawled across the porch and jumped over the railing where he was treated by firefighters already on scene.

The crew took Lieutenant Pepitone to Toledo Hospital where he was treated and released.

Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said Ms. Huddleston will not be charged with the shooting because "I don't think it meets all the culpability standards for felonious assault on a police officer."

Sergeant Heffernan said the department confiscated Ms. Huddleston's gun on Thursday morning.

"Lieutenant Pepitone is very lucky," Sergeant Heffernan said. "Another centimeter over and it could have been a very different story."

If you think this cop was there just to break in and take her gun fine. I see no evidence of that in the article.

And I see no evidence of the police properly identifying themselves, sirens blazing, super flashlights and all of the other crap you made up in the article.

Of course I don’t know if her husband taught her

Yet you emphatically claimed he didn't. IOW, YOU LIED!

One can certainly assume she wasn’t proficient enough to use it for its intended use - to shoot the intruder before or after calling the cops. she has a right to do this as much as she had the right to shoot the cop who was breaking in.

That's about the only thing you have said all day that makes sense except for the proficiency part. There have been numerous stories of people who are quite proficient, much younger and even professionally trained who do not hit their intended targets or shoot wildly in a stressed out situation....yes you guessed it, I am speaking of COPS!

Some people just don’t get it.

If all he proposed throughout this thread is true, she would have been arrested yet she wasn't.

He will not answer why that is though I have asked him several times.

Hate cops much?

Get desperate much?

Next you'll be calling him a meanie and report him to the mods.

One more time; WHY WASN'T SHE ARRESTED??

“...just enjoying this debate a little too much...”
-
While you might think that this debate is fun and entertaining,
others believe that defense of the 2nd amendment is very serious.

When does a person become too old to keep a weapon in their home,
and who gets to make that decision?

When do you allow someone to enter your home uninvited,
and what level of force are you allowed to use to prevent it?

How many flashlights and sirens need to be heard
before you “ass-u-me” that the person trying to break down your door is O.K?

You stepped out on the thin ice many, many posts ago and you have been trying to crawfish ever since.

Was that a personal attack?

I believe what applies to the goose should apply to the gander.

I believe all men (and women) are created as equals and are endowed with certain inalienable rights.

I don’t believe cops are above the law.

“And I see no evidence of the police properly identifying themselves, sirens blazing, super flashlights. . . “

Well then read it.

OK I’ll spoon feed it:
“. . . Ms. Huddleston called 911 after hearing what she thought was a burglar outside of her home about 12:30 Thursday morning. . .

“. . . After doing a perimeter check and finding no signs of anyone trying to break in and after trying to contact Ms. Huddleston with no response, the lieutenant sent other officers to the back of the house while he forced entry. . .

“. . . “It was a little intense at first,” the lieutenant said. “I didn’t know if a bad guy had broken in. . .

“. . . The lieutenant said he knew the wound was superficial so he crawled across the porch and jumped over the railing where he was treated by firefighters already on scene. . .”

fire figthers are on the scene.

did they run down the street? Not likely. More likely they were sent by the dispatcher who probably wanted to help this lady whom she found credible.

After a perimeter search implies to me bright flashlights.

After trying to contact her implies banging on the door etc. duh.

DO NOT reply to me again until you answer this question:

WHY was she not arrested?

Of, I think she wasn’t arrested because, as I stated earlier, she acted reasonably, as did the cop.

There is nothing in the article to refute my imagining that she feels awful and doen’t want HER gun back.

If you read my posts after you take the moment to read the article, of course, and please do before responding, there will be nothing to see that would suggest that I am in any way against the very precious 2nd Ammendment.

I also clearly stated that the cops should not take her gun but that her family could have taken better care of the whole thing.

She certainly has the right to own and not even register her late husband’s gun. and her family has the right to train her and take care of preventing this stuff.

I do maintain that the guy who tried to break into her house (not the cop) feels awful that he was so close to getting a gun which he, nor the cop expected.

But be reasonable, to say that a 92 y/o lady who calls the cops to help her and then shoots them can handle a weapon.

The press eats this stuff up, which is what they’re doing in the article.

Just how do you go about “registering” a gun?
I really want to know.

Answer this question and tell me the truth.
You don’t even own a gun, do you?

Of= Oh.

My suggestion is that the guy who tried to break in and his buddies will be back for the gun. Anyone can overpower a 92 y/o lady who can’f shoot straight.

And she can easily shoot a cop who, as the article states, attempts to contact her, but she will likely not be able to defend herself against an intent intruder. these are cases that they teach us on the range. The old “if you wield a gun be ready to use it or you’ll be dead”.

She is a prime victim. She knows it, too. A 92 y/o lady is no match for an aggressive intruder. she knows it and that’s why she called the cops. I picture her having been killed by her own gun if the Lt. hadn’t been close.

i’m just saying that sometimes the cops are on our side. No?

No, the gun has been confiscated.
-
“...she can easily shoot a cop ... but she will likely not be able to defend herself against an intent intruder...”

In her mind, both were equal threats: “someone” was trying to invade her home.
-
“...I picture her having been killed by her own gun if the Lt. hadn’t been close...”
-
Now you have just gone insane.

WFT you talking about, she hit him! Now that the cops confiscated her weapon you're right, the thugs will be back because she is totally defenseless!!

You keep spouting off that she is not "proficient" implying she shouldn't have a weapon but didn't address this earlier post:

There have been numerous stories of people who are quite proficient, much younger and even professionally trained who do not hit their intended targets or shoot wildly in a stressed out situation....yes you guessed it, I am speaking of COPS!

Go away, I have no more time for your stupid drivel.

Did you read the whole article? It says she called 911 to report what she thought was a break in.

I read it. You forgot this part.

""After doing a perimeter check and finding no signs of anyone trying to break in and after trying to contact Ms. Huddleston with no response, the lieutenant sent other officers to the back of the house while he forced entry.""

It begs the question, if there were no signs of break in or forced entry, why would they then attempt to force entry?

According to Ms. Huddleston, she thought the man outside prying open her front door lock

Ya see, LE can obtain the telephone number of any residence, if she called 911, they had her number anyway and could have simply called it and ask the occupants to come outside. Or simply knock on the door.

Can we quit now?

I’ve got my Stars and Stripes out and flying and am barbequing for my fam-damily.

Long live the Second Amendment and our glorious Constitution.

And may God continue to protect old ladies whose families sometimes fall short and who call the cops for protection.

And St. Michael appeal to the Lord to protect cops from their own stupidity and thirst for power; keep them from ruining it for the good ones.

“In her mind, both were equal threats: “someone” was trying to invade her home.”

do you call the cops and then wonder who is at the door?

I have no interest in personally attacking you, but for you to call me or anyone insane is to use a leftist attack argument, the kind they use when they cannot use logic.

My state has a non essential registry. It hlps to prevent trouble when one purchases a used weapon that has been used in a crime.

Can we be done now?

The lady shot a cop. I assume she feels bad and if she has a family they feel bad. I assume that if her intruder had broken in he would
ve been able to overpower her and take her late husband’s wapon to sell or for his own use. If he’d been high on drugs or amoral an easy leap he’d have killed her with her own gun.

The cop didn’t want her hurt and I assume she gave her weapon over.

She’s ripe for a break in. What are they looking for? She wouldn’t be in the news if she hadn’t shot anyone.

And I assume that if a law abiding relative commits to protect her, they can gain possession of the gun and if they can’t then it is a violation of the 2nd Ammendment (as it is family property) which I am sure is violated by certain corrupt LE ofte and the govt every day and it is what we all fight against.
