The Smoking Gun ^ | July 12, 2012

Posted on 07/12/2012 5:09:31 PM PDT by EveningStar

The lead investigator in the Trayvon Martin shooting case told the FBI that George Zimmerman was not a racist, but rather an “overzealous” and “soft guy” who had a “little hero complex,” according to documents released today by Florida prosecutors.

The FBI said the same thing about Richard Jewell. Not great precedent for Corey.

Thanks for posting this - well worth reading the FBI interview summaries provided by Smoking Gun. They have descriptions of what transpired, as reported by people who spoke to Mr. Zimmerman shortly after the shooting.

Too much information to sum up in an excerpt, since Smoking Gun provides images of documents.

They do make a valid point, EveningStar, and you are being unnecessarily contentious. Your excerpt was unusually short and then followed up with telling everyone to click on the link that you say you are always reluctant to do, but we should do to read the article. Do you have some kind of connection to that website???

You are entitled to cite 300 words, and actually more since much of what is done on this site is critiquing the written articles. You cited your obligation to the authors of the material on that website, but you also have an obligation to those who read what you cite. The law entitles you to cite 300 words -- so use them.

No one should be forced to click any link here to another site. This place is called Free Republic, not Forced Republic. They should be able to do it if they freely choose, not because they are forced to in order to get the gist of an article. Please drop the attitude and be more respectful of your readers -- or find something else to do.

Misleading headline!

Makes it sound as if an FBI profiler came up with this absurd terminology, "hero complex."

Turns out it was not an FBI psychologist, criminologist, criminal profiler, or any other kind of professional who came up with this "hero complex" garbage. It was a COP.

Nothing against cops; but since when have they been given the power to make pronouncements that are usually reserved to psychiatrists?

And by the way, Mr. Serino: The word "complex" is seriously outdated in the world of psychobabble.

I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. And you people act like clicking on a link is a hardship. You sound like liberal freeloaders. You sure don't sound like conservatives.

No. My posting practices are fairly consistent.

Misleading headline!

The person who writes the article and the person who writes the headline are not always the same person. I personally think that the headline writing is frequently left to a junior staffer. :)

"Is this cop also a psychologist? If not, his opinion is irrelevant to anything and anyone other than the journalist community."

So let me get this straight, according to you, unless one is a licensed psychologist, a person doesn't have the capacity or expertise to measure another person's personality?

What law?

The copyright law that you claim to be so concerned about.

I'm not forcing anyone to do anything.

Then what the hell was post #8 all about???

And you people act like clicking on a link is a hardship.

You duplicitous curmudgeon. You just admitted that you don't like to do it. So why should anybody else???

You sound like liberal freeloaders.

Why??? Because we won't click on a link that you even admitted that you don't like to do????

You sure don't sound like conservatives.

Why??? Because we made a request that has somehow touched a sensitive nerve??? Your excuses for not citing a fair use of that article don't hold water.

I never said that. And I click on links all the time.

So you didn't type this at post #32:

Somebody had to click on the link. It was me this time. However, I wouldn’t go anywhere on the net without anti-virus and anti-spyware.

[A]I believe in using the excerpt as a teaser so that the reader has to click the link.[Post #25]

[B]And you don’t have to click on anything if you don’t want to.

So which is it that you are really doing?? [A] or [B]???

Who in his right mind would not have anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed on his computer? It’s common sense.

Agreed! The liver biopsy told me everything I needed to know. I had never heard about Lean prior to this incident. That is one very deadly abuse.

Everybody has it but they are still rightfully reluctant to click on other sites if they don't have to, as you recognized in your post.

So which is it A or B???

Nobody should be forced to click on a link. But I’m not going to commit theft for those who don’t want to click on the link but still want to read the full article.

If Jim gets sued again, it will not be because of me. I will have done my part.

Many FReepers have a skewed, unrealistic view of copyright laws and intellectual property. Posting a full article without permission, or excessively excerpting an article, is theft - pure and simple.

From Wiki (but heavily substantiated by numerous legal sources you could find by falling off a turnip truck and opening your eyes when you stopped rolling): "Fair use copyright usage includes commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship. It provides for the legal, unlicensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material."

The ONLY reason Free Republic has to do this excerpt crap is they didn't have the money to fight off the bogus lawsuits in court.

So what part of "dead wrong kneejerk martinet" don't you get about the pure and simple fraud of your answer?

Then keep it to 300 words and he cannot get sued.

300 words is nothing — it’s 15 lines.

Anything less than that and people will just skip it all together, and that doesn’t serve the author, does it???

This “cop” is trained and licensed to make such determinations? Maybe the “cop” was jealous she didn’t get to shoot someone using her “hero complex”.
