Paterno, in letter, defended Penn St. football

Joe Paterno defended his football program's integrity in a 7-month-old letter released Wednesday, a day ahead of a report that could forever mar his legacy.

In the letter, written shortly before his death and confirmed as legitimate by his family, Paterno rejected the notion that Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse of boys amounted to a ''football scandal'' or in any way tarnished the accomplishments of his players or Penn State's reputation as a whole.

The results of Penn State's internal investigation into the Sandusky scandal are set to be released Thursday in a report that should answer many of the troubling questions swirling around one of the worst scandals in sports history.

A team led by former FBI ex-director Louis Freeh interviewed hundreds of people to learn how the university responded to warning signs that its once-revered former assistant football coach - a man who helped Paterno win two national titles for a university that touted ''success with honor'' - was a serial child molester...

< snip >

Eight months after Sandusky's arrest, it remains unclear how top university officials handled reports dating back at least 14 years that Sandusky was behaving inappropriately with boys he met through his charity, bringing them on campus and forcing them into sex acts...

< snip >

'Over and over again, I have heard Penn State officials decrying the influence of football and have heard such ignorant comments like Penn State will no longer be a 'football factory' and we are going to 'start' focusing on integrity in athletics,'' Paterno wrote. ''These statements are simply unsupported by the five decades of evidence to the contrary - and succeed only in unfairly besmirching both a great university and the players and alumni of the football program who have given of themselves to help make it great.''

Maybe if you’d done a little research, you’d find that this letter was sent to his ex-players. It was meant for THEM, not us.

So like a directive from the Co$ to members of the SeaOrg. Noncultists wouldn't understand.

“But because there are certainly a number of Freepers who didn’t like Joe before, now they will take whatever Freeh says as gospel. “

I call BS!!! I didn’t know Joe Paterno from a lump of coal before this scandal exploded.

It's not BS. The cultperson is right. If you don't kmow who JoePatty is, you can't "like" him.

Do you know they have never identified the child? Those were the only charges dropped.

The child McQueary witnessed in the shower being raped was never identified.

After that big pussy interrupted the rape, he allowed Sandusky (who knew he had been seen) to leave with his victim.

No effort was ever made by McQueary, his father, Paterno or any of the Penn State officials he told about the incident to locate and help that boy.

There's no way of knowing if that boy ever saw the next morning and nobody from PSU gave a crap about him one way or another.

I don’t know of any. That isn’t to say that someone didn’t look. I just don’t have any info. McQ was the only one who saw him.

Penn State. Where according to testimony it was nothing unusual about adult men showering with young boys.

“It’s not BS. The cultperson is right. If you don’t kmow who JoePatty is, you can’t “like” him.”

How about this from one of the other posters:

I was hoping that JoPa would also be led to jail to spend time in prison jammies, but the good Lord wanted to chat with him.
I’ve never had any use for this “integrity in sports” guy, And his allowing Sandusky to personally sodomize all those kids proves my point.

Old Joe Pa took the easy way out. I just hope that he’s paying the price wherever he ended up!

The other salient comment by another poster was: “bulldoze the place”!

Collegiate athletics are “so important” to life as we know it. Saturday and Sunday are coming so you had better get a couple of extra sixpacks so you can get your sports fix. To hell with these children, it’s the game that’s all important! Now THAT was what “Joe Pa” was all about.

I don’t know and of the several boys that did testify nobody said, he is the boy in the shower.

I amend my original post. The Paterno family did NOT release this letter. They simply confirmed it’s existence yesterday. It was sent to a select number of ex-players back in December, and it eventually found it’s way to a message board.

As to the detractors - show me proof that Joe Paterno was involved in some sort of cover up, or stop with the over the top comments.

“Joe ran that entire town, and everyone knows it!” doesn’t exactly qualify as proof.

He was told about a shower rape and passed the information along. Then he continued to work with the rapist for years. All I ask is for you to imagine the same scenario at your place of work, would you spend years working with a known child rapist without doing anything more? Would you report it to a higher authority if nothing came from the first attempt?

I think it's really funny that he talked about the ignorance of his detractors, which is exactly the word Michael Jackson always uses on South Park when people bring up his molestation activities.

Well South Park used it because that was the phrase MJ himself repeatedly used in his interview/program with Martin Bashir.

cue Alanis Morrisette

He knew about the 1998 investigation and did nothing.

So the incident in 2001 was the SECOND time that “JoePa” had credible reports that Sandusky was perving on little boys.

According to the report they were ready to go to the authorities UNTIL a meeting with “JoePa” - and then they decided to be “humane” to SANDUSKY - and apparently being “humane” was to allow him continued access to Penn State - the “currency” with “empowered” him to continue ‘grooming’ boys for pedophilia.

McQueery, who went to Paterno to report the 2001 shower incident was given a job. If he were a credible witness then why was nothing ever done? If he were not a credible witness - why was he given a job?

“JoePa” is scum. He witnessed Sandusky parade boys around the Penn State campus and attend banquets and the like for over a DECADE after TWO (at least) credible reports of pedophilia.

Sorry that you idolize (and named your FR account after) a man who is less than a man and who thought football was more important that child rape - but the facts are the facts.
