(CNN) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage apologized Monday for referring to the Internal Revenue Service as the "Gestapo" in his weekly radio address over the weekend.
"It was not my intent to insult anyone, especially the Jewish Community, or minimize the fact that millions of people were murdered," the Republican governor said in a statement.
In a speech Saturday blasting the Supreme Court's recent decision to uphold President Barack Obama's health care reform, LePage directly addressed the high court's ruling of the law's penalty as a "tax."
He argued that Congress could now use its taxation power to "compel behavior or lack thereof," and asked what the government would do next: "More taxes if we don't drive Toyota Priuses or if we eat too much junk food or maybe even pea soup?"
He continued: "This decision has made America less free. We the people have been told there is no choice. You must buy health insurance or pay the new Gestapo -- the I.R.S."

*Sigh*. ANOTHER spineless wonder.
(((YAWN))) Apologies are a dime a dozen these days. Everybody is apologizing these days. Some are even apologizing for apologizing.
Surely Jews were not the only folks in Germany who were left to the tender mercies of the Gestapo? This is ridiculous.
Big, big, big mistake!
I think the only thing faster than a Demonrat stealing your liberty and money is a Republican making an apology for an accurate statement.
OMG! OMG!
I said something that might offend somebody!
OMG! OMG!
Typical RINO weasel.
As a Mainer I thought his comment was right on. He could have used today’s statement as an opportunity to slam not only the IRS but the TSA, EPA and the list goes on. I’m sorry he apologized (even though it seemed like a weak apology).
If the tactics fit ....
Of course the Jews weren’t the only people arrested by the gestapo but the bigger question is how is pointing out Gestapo-like characteristics in the IRS in any way offensive to Jews? Is the IRS a primarily Jewish organization?
Are we never allowed to cite NAZI history when analyzing current events because such references are possibly offensive to Jews? And just how are they offensive to Jews? I thought we were SUPPOSED to remember.
The illogic here is monumental.
Why am I not surprised.
It’s about evil and something larger than only Jews. It’s about evil and humanity.
No sane American would have wanted the IRS to be medical police! And I would imagine a lot of IRS folks will quit, not wanting to be a part of that either. Taxes yes, medical police no!
He could well have pointed out that just as the Gestapo were a baleful presence in the lives of both Jews and non-Jews, this new medical police IRS would be too. Also, don’t a disproportionate (per capita compared to non-Jews) number of Jews go on to be doctors? This mutant IRS will be breathing down their necks too.
Says it all...are there ANY men left in this country?
