The 15-year-old canine, which is blind and partly deaf, is believed to have escaped and run to a dock along the Alafia River with the help of another one of Carter's dogs.
That's where Brian Peterson enters the story.
He was jet skiing on the river on July 4th when a woman alerted him to a dog in the water.
"Elsie was drowning," Peterson recalled. "I got on my jet ski, went over and jumped out and saved her."
"We took her home with us and started the process of putting found dog [fliers] out there," he said. "We had already got her out on the humane society website and put her out on Craigslist under found dogs."
Late Saturday afternoon Carter got his old friend back. The reunion also led to a new friendship between Carter and Peterson.
Carter: "This is a great ending to what could have been a sad story. I think we'll become friends for life."

Great story!
PING
Good thing there was not a cop around.. Might have shot the dog dead. (no.. I am not kidding)
Glad to hear this dog story had a happy ending.
Dammt! I knew I should have bought Kleenex today.
I have 2 steps to go from the kitchen to the garage floor to be let out...I took her over to my daughters and she has 3 steps from her garage...we couldn't get Pepper up that 3rd step at all, she just backed away...so we went in through her front door and not the garage...but scared me several days ago I was in the basement working with some glass and she tried to go down stairs and fell and hit all 13 steps....I ran to her and got her on her feet, thank God no broken bones and she just started wandering around the basement smelling out everything......As long as she wags her tail and still eats we take life one day at a time...
Just cannot rearrange any furniture anymore....
You have a heart of gold - God Bless you!
Blessings, Goat Granny and Pepper!
Oh, darling, your “Thread Doggie” is great! WOOF!
:-)
SARD is a sudden destruction of all the rods and cones in the back of the eye. Its quite rare. Wikipedia said only 4000 cases last year in the US No knowed cause or cure
There is an excellent book, called Living With Blind Dogs, by Caroline Levin. It covers all the logistics stuff & the causes of blindness as well. It has some helpful tips like putting perfume or essential oils on table/ chair legs (or on your legs at about the level of their noses) to help them get around.
If this is a new development for Pepper, prepare to be amazed.
When I let her out on her cable, she does well in the yard, but of course there are lots of smells for her out there. Last year we could walk a mile, single file down the road, but cannot even come close to that anymore..we just walk my 4 1/2 acres.....she went blind this past winter, but deaf for a couple of years....CAUTION; The vet I use to take her to caused her deafness. When I went to my new vet I use now he looked at the medication she was on and said I hate to tell you this, but this medication is known to cause deafness in dogs...... I checked on the internet on the medication and they had a place for remarks....I only read the first 28 of over 50 and 5 dogs were deaf because of the medication....if the vet would have told me there was a possiblilty of deafness, I wouldn't have used it.....GG
I can imagine. I worry about my Mia (who is blind from birth & has *no* problem getting from A to B, whatever the obstacles. She has to sit in a chair next to me when we eat or she’ll find/ make trouble with one of the others. She seems to have a little trouble hearing me when there are other noises like tv or traffic, people talking). Two of our other dogs are deaf- our best girl, Gypsy, who is 14 & so full of joy, still, but losing the use of her legs & our “failed” foster, Portia, who is a senior, but wild as a March hare & has a heart murmur.
I bet Pepper adjusts. 6 months isn’t very long. She will still bump into things some times, but you’ll be blown away how well she gets around, others.
Blindness & deafness really isn’t a “disability” for them as long as they are in a safe situation.
I know re meds. I’ve had some run-ins (& some vet bills suitable for framing) & learned the hard way.
Thank you for bringing it up!
I hope more & more people will research common drugs prescribed for their pets (esp NSAIDS & heart worm prevention/ anti parasitics). I almost lost my youngest girl to Ivermectin sensitivity. Apparently, most vets take the drug reps at their word & that is *not* a good thing.
I would add Please Google to what you have said.
God Bless you & your Pepper!
>>> “I hate to tell you this, but this medication is known to cause deafness in dogs...”
What med is that?
I have it written down and will find it for you....I kept the bill that had the name of the med. on it. That was a couple of years ago. It was a med for a ear problem...
This bill lists 2 meds. I believe the nasty one was called MOMETAMAX 15GM each. You can find it on the internet. The other medication TRIZ ULTRA WITH KETO 4OZ... The one I looked up was the mometamax after my new vet told me it can cause deafness....for some dogs its fine..
Thank you. A quick scan online has the Mometamax for sale thru several suppliers & requires a prescription. Warns that if you notice deafness to stop using & notify your vet. IMO, it should come with a stronger warning than that, and listed among possible side effects. By the time the dog is deaf, it’s too late.
What a shame. :o(
