85,000 Americans went on disability benefit in June (while only 80,000 jobs were added same period)

The Obama administration has been touting the economy’s recovery, but the numbers are painting a different picture, namely that more workers joined the federal government's disability program in June than got new jobs, according to two new government reports.

The economy created 80,000 jobs in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday.

In contrast, 85,000 workers left the workforce to enroll in the Social Security Disability Insurance program that same month, according to the Social Security Administration.

The disability ranks have been consistently ahead of job growth throughout the past three years, Investor's Business Daily reported.

While the economy has created 2.6 million jobs since June of 2009, as many of 3.1 million people have become recipients of federal disability insurance.

In other words, the number of new disability beneficiaries has climbed 19 per cent faster than the number of jobs created during the same period marked by sluggish recovery.

In total, a record of 8,733,461 workers took federal disability insurance payments in June, exceeding the entire population of New York City by more than 500,000, according to the Social Security Administration.

And the trend is expected to continue. In just the last month, almost 275,000 people filed for disability benefits. Experts say that more people try to get on disability when jobs are hard to find, and changes to eligibility rules enacted back in 1984 have made it far easier to qualify.

The Social Security System’s Disability Insurance Trust Fund has run deficits in each of the last three fiscal years, meaning that the government has been forced to borrow money to pay disability benefits to the workers claiming them.

The number of people who have left the workforce altogether has jumped by 7.3 million since 2009, according to Investor's Business Daily.

At least 2 major problem extend beyond Obama or the Dems and are indemic in our society.
1. Jobs are “owned” by someone other than the employer and that a person “owns” a specific job, or at least a specific job title. This is totally anti-thetic to the capitalist idea of letting the free market decide.

2. A disability for one job is a disability for all jobs. A white collar worker with a bum leg can claim disability because it is a disability for a running back. I just had one seek to rent from me with exactly that situation. He claimed he would have no problem walking the stairs to a 2d floor bedroom. His disability only bothered him when he tried to work.

I don’t know how these people go around the system. I have three chronic illnesses, and need knee and back surgery. Still I cannot get disability. I was told...that my condition/s must keep me from being able to do any kind of work for at least a year, including sit down work. I can do sit down work, so I was not eligible.

This is not uncommon.

There are people who are truly disabled (in one big way or multiple less substantial ways) who continually get denied.

I'm guessing you have a fairly steady record of employment (over the past year or two), regardless of whether it's part-time work or full-time work.

Or you have a spouse who is bringing in $.

Any time a disability judge sees that you are even trying to work, you are screwed.

You need to have a good 18-36 months of little to no employment to have a chance.

It's not uncommon for someone who's bi-polar to get disability rather quickly, find the right combination of meds, and become healthy enough to go back to work again.

However, once someone is on disability, most would rather just keep their safety net vs. venture out to work again.

These people actually see seeking employment as being risky. Because if and when they are employed again in some capacity (while collecting a smaller portion of disability), they have to report what they are earning to the gov't on a regular basis.

You see, reporting back to the gov't what you are up to is very time-consuming and a pain, so the person would rather just not work and not have to worry about any cumbersome paperwork.

I wish you the best in overcoming your illnesses. I give you props for hanging in there and having the "right" attitude. It's not like you're trying to suck off the system like most folks.

In the past few qualified without going through months and months of the appeals processes.. this 'splains a few things about today for some making claims.

"Compassionate Allowances [started in 2008] are a way of quickly identifying medical conditions and diseases that consistently qualify under the SSDI's Listing of Impairments. The program allows the SSA to quickly identify individuals who are most obviously disabled and can no longer work based on quickly obtainable medical information [and do not need to do anything special to apply] . . . The SSA will determine whether the condition qualifies for the Program, and if it does, the approval time period is much quicker than the usual process.

"The Compassionate Allowances Program . . . includes more than 100 conditions and diseases that are so severe that the SSA does not need to obtain the applicant's complete work history in order to reach a decision. Since an applicant's total work history is not required, the process is faster.

"The Compassionate Allowances Program includes certain cancers, immune system conditions, and adult brain disorders. The list is expected to grow to 165 conditions by this summer (2012). An experienced Social Security disability attorney can help discern whether an applicant's condition meets one of the conditions included in the program. You can always say you "hurt your back". If that doesn't work, stay drunk for awhile and claim you're an alcoholic, or get on the heroin, or convince a doctor you have ADD, ADHD, you're bipolar, whatever. There's plenty of ways to get your many years of tax dollars back out of the scumbag government toilet you were forced to dump them into. There is definitely no shortage of scumbag lawyers who specialize in shepherding people onto the disability gravy train.

I recommend everybody look into making a disability claim, or doing anything else you can to take back some of your tax dollars before the Democrat politicians and their parasite voting base gobble it all up.
