Report: Dozens pass out from heat at Obama campaign event By Jonathan Easley - 07/06/12 03:14 PM ET
Dozens of supporters passed out from the extreme heat at an Obama campaign event in Pittsburgh on Friday.
Obama was speaking outdoors at Carnegie Mellon University as part of his two-day campaign swing via bus through the key swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, and according to multiple reports on Twitter, people were being carted off on stretchers or leaving the event to seek shade.
AccuWeather said the temperature was 98 degrees at the time of the speech, but that it felt like 106.
The soaring temperatures have been a strange backdrop for the presidents bus tour, as Obama has appeared predominantly outdoors and can be seen pouring sweat at times. It didnt appear that the president cut his stump speech, which went on for more than an hour, short because of the heat.
Also on Friday, a senior Obama administration official addressed the record-breaking heat waves hitting some parts of the country, as well as the wildfires ravaging Colorado, saying it was altering the perceptions of climate change in the United States.
Many people around the world are beginning to appreciate that climate change is under way, that its having consequences that are playing out in real time and, in the United States at least, we are seeing more and more examples of extreme weather and extreme climate-related events, said Jane Lubchenco, who heads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
I instantly got a headache from this sentence's poor wording.
You’d have to get me passed out drunk to get me to an Obama event.
You’d have to get me passed out drunk to get me to an Obama event.
The Obama “death panel” sure does work fast.
Saw a bit of this on tv.
The Steeler fans were out in force today.
A few Pirate faithful too.
Tough folks, willing to take a dive for their hero Baraq.
100 degrees and the fool talks for an hour adding even more hot air. It reminds me of when algore gave speeches on globull warming in a blizzard.
Not a good day. Just read the 71-year-old restaurant owner who served him bacon and eggs this morning died suddenly afterwards.
Here in what’s known as the “Inland Empire” we often have been in triple digits over the years. I work outdoors in 98 deg. temperatures.
Today is ninty deg., and I’ve been out chasing a Donkey around his corral trying to medicate his leg. He doesn’t like it, but there’s a difference between OUR 90’s, and the 90’s back East, and in the deep South, oh and other areas as well.
We always hear, read about the heat, but never the natural humidity which along with the heat contributes so much to “passing out”, and other discomforts. We have slight natural humidity here in the IE, so we don’t suffer in the heat as others do where the Humidity is so extreme.
Sly in their omissions of contributing factors in the news they present us.
In the heat of a Wichita Falls sun in September of 1977....we were forced to do a big military parade. They had two ambulances standing by, and at least a dozen medical folks positioned around those of us in full-up dress uniform. If this had been done at 9AM....we might have been ok, but it was an afternoon event. There were three folks who collapsed, and at least another five or six who needed attention after the event finished up.
The problem is that when you stage some event in 90-plus degree temperature...you simply invite trouble. If it was a covered tent....you might get by, but it’s usually pretty stupid to have an event like this in such temperatures.
Hope they don't go retroactive.
Teacher, teacher - I know why they passed out:
SUSTAINED DEVELOPMENT
What, that’s the wrong answer? But teach, we were taught not to use Global Warming or Climate Change anymore so what is the right answer?
If the victim has collapsed or is unconscious, call SATAN.
We are all short because of the heat.
PA people just never get enough!
