Obama Struggles to Shine Again in Rust Belt
The Washington Times ^ | July 5, 2012 | Seth McLaughlin

As President Obama is in the middle of a two-day “Betting on America” bus tour across Ohio and Pennsylvania, political analysts said he will have to reassemble the “hope and change” demographic coalition of 2008 that relied on a high turnout of youths and blacks, and winning a larger-than-usual percentage of Hispanics and whites and he somehow has to reach working-class white voters who have turned away from him in large numbers since 2008.”

In 2010, voters sent a strong message of discontent to Mr. Obama by electing Republicans in nearly every competitive race in the Rust Belt. Furthermore, each of Ohio’s 88 counties, including the Democratic stronghold of Cuyahoga, overwhelmingly supported State Issue 3 in 2011, which aimed to undercut the president’s health care law.

Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett cited the 2010 elections and Mr. Obama’s poor primary performances this year in Kentucky, where 42 percent of the vote went “uncommitted,” and West Virginia, where 40 percent of the vote went to federal inmate Keith Judd, as proof that the incumbent is out of sync with Rust Belters, particularly those living in southeastern Ohio, which Mr. Bennett dubbed “our Appalachian Bible Belt area.” “Those people think the same way as those people in West Virginia and Kentucky do,”

“Blue-collar whites did not back Obama in 2008, but this group turned even more fiercely against him since 2008 because of the economy and because they came to believe that Obama does not share their values or understand their lives,” Mr. Olsen said.

A Gallup poll release last month showed Mr. Obama’s support among all voters has dipped 5 percentage points since 2008 — and dropped slightly more among his key white constituencies, which include young adults and female college graduates.

I pray that this time he loses IA, IN, MO, OH, NC, VA and FL. That will seal the deal for his loss and send his a** back to Chicago. I feel rather certain that the GOP will take back IN, MO, NC, and FL this time. Not so sure about IA, OH and VA. But we must win either Ohio or Virginia. And, if we pick up Michigan and/or Wisconsin, which both are doable, hey, Obama is in deep doo do.

We, the People, have seen the “change” that Obama believes in, and We do not like it.

Campaigning in Ohio President Obama bragged about getting tough on trade with China and saving the US auto industry, while accusing Romney of sending jobs overseas. He conveniently forgot to mention, however, that after closing several factories and dealerships in this country, General Motors took billions of taxpayer dollars from Obama and built 14 manufacturing plants in The People’s Republic of China.

Obama will lose ever state you have listed, and very likely will lose PA and WI as well.

This guy is done. He really thought his ‘cult of personality’ would allow him to do anything so he ran roughshod over everything and will be sent packing. The best he could possibly do was 42-43% nationally if he ran a perfect campaign, and that was before the health care ruling, at this point his campaign is a joke, and the health care ruling riled up far more than just the “conservative base” don’t kid yourself on that one, this law is hated universally. 50% approval of it? hardly.

This guy will be beyond lucky if he gets 40% of the vote on election day. He’s toast in the rust belt and south that’s for sure. Only rust belt states in that area likely to stay blue would be IL and MN, and honestly the more he melts down even those aren’t a sure thing.

Gee, maybe Romney’s campaign could mention that. What are they doing with all that money they raised after the SC ruling? Is Romney even campaigning? I see Obama commercials all the time but none for Romney. Maybe Romney doesn’t need SC.

I’ve only seen one Obama bumper sticker in the last 6 mo, and I’ve heard that virtually no one will admit to having voted for Obama during the last election. This is a sure sign that his goose is cooked and he’ll lose in a landslide. Good riddance!

Yesterday the Messiah claimed he saved the American Auto industry. He stole money from bond holders and outsourced all of Chrysler Corp to Fiat.

His lie forgets the US Auto industry is now down south in Missippi, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee. The real US Auto industry is free of the cancer that is the United Auto Workers Union and is thriving.

The real outsourcing sinner is Obama....... he sold out Chrysler

The Romney camp needs to get off their a** and remind people in MI and OH about that.

IL is a sure thing for him, I live there and Chicago messes everything up. But I used to live in Iowa and I think that state will flip to Mittens, the aura on Obama is gone, and that aura of being the “Messiah” from the Midwest in 2008 helped him carry that state.

FWIW a lot of Iowans dislike people from Illinois (btw I love Iowa), we’re their version of New Yorkers invading other states.

Working class whites in the Rust Belt believe that Barry has fomented a race war and has sided against them. No way he is gonna win them back.

I go into Chicago a lot on business and for fun to hang out with my buddies. Last week I was in the city driving around in true blue Dem areas, I only spotted 2 zero stickers. I work in the Chicago suburbs too and there it's even worse I've only seen 4 this past year and I'm counting old 2008 ones as half of those.

I see plenty of them here in Baltimore County MD. I’ve only seen two Romney srickers. Very discouraging.

Just to set the record straight, Obama DID NOT win Missouri in 2008. McCain did, by virtue of about 4000 votes in St. Charles County.

We in St. Charles County are working hard again to make sure Obama doesn't win here - or the state of Missouri - in 2012.

And all Missourians are working hard to make sure Claire McCaskill does not return to WDC, but is replaced by a strong conservative Republican Senator. (Any of her 3 strongest Republican opponents will be a vast improvement!)

Don’t know if they believe he fomented a race war, but they do believe this guy doesn’t remotely represent them or their values or what this country represents... the Blue Dog Democrat is abandoning this idiot in droves, he has NO CHANCE in the rust belt, or the south because of it.

IL and MN are the only states that likely will stay blue among the rust belt or south. The only states I really consider “battleground” right now in those 2 areas, are PA and MI, and I feel pretty confident they will be solid Red long before Novemeber. Obama will be fighting to defend classic blue territories by September.
