It would however make driving more interesting. Drivers there would do what I do, for a similar reason: I speed so as to reduce the chance of being hit by falling meteorites.

The main problem as I understand it is that the French thoroughly suck at driving, even when they’re sober.

I didnt read this article, but I read about the law last year or so. Its not an ignition interlock. They just have to carry a disposable breathalyzer-type device to use upon request. Just my understanding and recollection . . . Yes, that is my understanding of the law. There's a technical twist, though... you've got to have at least two of the breath alcohol test kits on board. See, even if you test "clean", the gendermes can still impound your vehicle for lacking the (recently used) test equipment.
For the past few months, the U.K. motorsports forums were discussing this requirement in advance of the annual pilgrimage of British petrolheads across the Channel and down to Le Mans.
