This is SO different from the 60s. Hard to believe a smartphone could replace a Mustang convertible....

Todays youth are useless for anything other than paying taxes and agreeing to nanny state domination of society.

I compare my childhood in the ‘50’s with that of today. It brings a tear to my eye, but worse, there’s no way to communicate it to the youth of today. It is a good time to be old.

Heh. Doesn’t matter what kind of motor you have under the hood in a traffic jam. And nowadays you have six-cylinder Mustangs with over 300 horses . . .

Between massive unemployment, spiking taxes and sticker prices shooting up to feed the unions, who can afford a car?

Nanny cars, traffic cameras, GPS, strict OWI laws, parents willing to host their children’s sex indulgences - no reason for kids to like driving a car these days.

Not surprising, considering the economic realities facing our youth. Have you priced used vehicles, gas, and insurance recently?

Environmental and safety regulations have driven up the costs of cars, as well as the cost of their manufacture. Insurance rates for teen drivers are downright terrifying. Gas, while thankfully dropping like about every other commodity and potential investment vehicle, is still damned high.

Hell, even the laws regarding teen drivers have changed since you were kids. Some states don’t allow drivers under the age of 18 to drive after dark, or with more than one passenger in the car, or have other restrictions on driving that severely limit the usefulness of a driver’s license to a teenager.

As comforting as it might be for you to think that today’s youth are just totally worthless, the fact of the matter is decades of liberalism have been industriously chipping away at the foundations of the American way of life, and as a result our youth today are having to contend with a world that’s quite a bit different economically and socially than the one you grew up in. Many of the things that you enjoyed or even considered part and parcel of simply being an American are just not within feasible reach of today’s generation.

My 15 yo daughter has no desire to get a license. My friends are having the same problem with their kids not wanting a drivers license, just hoping that their parents will always be there to run them to the mall.

I have answered this little problem with the fact that I refuse to drive her anyplace that is not on the way or at a time that is convenient for me.

The best part is that I personally do not drive a car for most trips. I ride a bike unless it is absolutely necessary to take the car.

I don’t see this.

males are always driving for fun.

women not so much.

could this also be part of the ongoing ticket quotas (any statement to the contrary is a lie)

I don’t see why driving is considered an indicator of “freedom” these days. What with punitive taxes, insurance costs, soon to be mandatory black boxes, limited licenses etc I don’t see it as being anything more than a pain for the younger set.

HOWEVER I saw something on the freeway the other day I had never seen before: a guy driving a truck without a license plate. Instead there was a plate that said “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” But no plate. He was meticulously staying within the speeding laws giving no reason to stop him. Other than the lack of a plate. It made me wonder. If someone were to decide to purchase some clunker for cash, refuse to insure, title, or plate it, what could the state really do? Do the cops really want the hassle particularly if the person is violating no traffic laws?

I live in a college town and see numerous mustangs, camaros and challengers on the road.

I think this is media hooey. The only reason for young people to not drive is money. If they’ve got money, it is a priority to get wheels, no matter what the media says.

Much of it has to do with mating: girls think a boy’s car says a lot about him: his wealth, style, employment; and they want a car so they don’t have to ride in cars with boys if there are no good prospects. Boys are intensely aware of the status of cars, and the freedom they offer, as well as convenience.

supporter of healthy eating. We’re certainly
not hearing it from our customers”

It’s too expensive. Insurance, gas, repairs, upkeep.

Back in the day, almost anyone could pick up a junker and fix it up yourself, change oil, etc.

We grew up taking things apart & putting them together - tough to do in the digital age for the average joe or jane.

Seems to me that access to immediate communications through cell phones - phone, text, internet, facebook, etc. has impacted this change - plus the cost of having a teenage driver is through the roof, not to mention the cost of a dependable car with all the newer cars so difficult and costly to maintain.

Of course, it’s hard to party with just a cell phone.
