A group of Russia’s Pacific Fleet warships has arrived at the U.S. Pearl Harbor naval base to take part in the Rim of the Pacific international drills, a fleet spokesman said on Saturday.
“During their long voyage from Vladivostok to Pearl Harbor, the warships’ crews held several firing drills, successfully destroying all the targets,” First-Rank Captain Roman Martov said.
The naval task group comprising the Admiral Panteleyev destroyer, the tanker Boris Butoma and the Fotiy Krylov salvage tug sailed off Vladivostok in the Russian Far East on June 13 to head for the U.S. Hawaiian Islands where the RIMPAC-2012 large-scale international naval exercises will be held.

Does the U.S. Navy always travel with a salvage ship like the Russians seem to find necessary? ;-)
Almost wish I still worked at Pearl to watch them come in. Remember how incongruous it was seeing Japanese flags come into the harbor........
The Pantaleyev is a good looking ship. I wish our’s still had superfiring turrets - makes a warship look like a warship.
I was stationed at Lajes Field, Azores,Portugal in the late Seventies. I walked out of the Comm Squadron Building on morning after a Mid-shift to see a Hammer and Sickle on the Rudder of a plane not even fifty feet away from me. That was a shock! That plane stayed there for a few weeks, our crypto gear be damned.
I remember during my time in the navy (1980s), when we had an Indian Ocean tour and we found ourselves shadowed by Soviet Krivak class destroyers every day. They lit us up regularly with their weapons systems, disrupted our underway replenishment maneuvers, and created general havoc on our day-to-day deployment activities.
One day, we had a USO group come to our ship for the day. They setup on the fantail and gave us a concert. One of the Soviet vessels edged up alongside and dropped anchor. We weren’t only but a few hundred yards from each other. Their crew came out and sat on the decks, listening to our concert. We waved back and forth and took pictures of each other across the water. When the concert was over, they weighed anchor and pulled away. Not too long after that, they lit us up again with their weapons systems.
It reminded me of that World War I story of the opposing soldiers in the trenches during Christmas.
It’s really a shame that we consider each other enemies. Back in the 1800s, Russia and the U.S. were the closest of friends.

In 1968 I was aboard USS Independence for a long Med Cruise...we left Norfolk on Jan 5,'68 ,did work-ups in the Carribean and proceeded to the Med and did not return to NORVA until Jan 27,'69.
During that deployment the Russians did their usual stuff to interfere with us whenever they could...but they met their match with our CO,CAPT Mathews,(sorry his first name escapes me since we traveled in different social circles.),who had enough of their shenanigans.
The Russians were getting in the habit of lining up for replenishment with our destroyers and stuff like that which was worth a chuckle,but they went too far when they statred cutting across our bow when we were starting to launch aircraft.
CAPT Mathews began collision drills saying he wanted us to clear everything forward of Frame 109 whenever the collision alarm sounded.The Captain was quoted as saying,"The next time that sonovabitch cuts my bow I'm gonna run him over!"
Sure enough a few days later one their Petya(?)class frigates cut across our bow...I was on the roof at the angle at the time and found myself looking down at the fantail of that little f****r and the gaping faces of the guys on deck.
They never,never tried that trick again or any other one either for the rest of that deployment!

A Russian told me this: “Russia has no friends—only interests.” They smirked at us for thinking otherwise, saying Americans were like little children who believed any lies they were told, or at worst, fools who believed their own propaganda. They like strong leaders—they respect this.

I remember the zeros flying overhead in 1969! Oh wait, they were filming a movie then!
I served on USS Memphis (SSN 691) in the early 1980’s. We used to wait off the Murmansk Inlet and then trail Soviet Yankee class SSBNs as they left their bases at Polarny and Gadzhiyevo. We would maneuver so as to be deep in his starboard quarter at a range of 5,000 to 7,000 yards where we had solid passive sonar contact. In this position, almost astern of the Yankee, we were in the baffled area of his sonar system and he was unable to detect us.
We would trail the Yankee all the way to his “patrol box” which was 500 to 1,000 miles off our East Coast. Then P-3 Orion ASW aircraft flying out of Bermuda would locate and track the Yankee. We would come to periscope depth, raise a radio antenna and communicate with the P-3 to take over the trail.
Yeah it does.
They also took off from NAF Lajes.
The USS Memphis (SSN 691)...wow! Did you ever go to the Ice Cap and if so did your rank or rating allow you to look outside? I'll understand if that is only something the Boomers do.
This would be a really bad time for the Germans to bomb Pearl Harbor again.
