CHICAGO (Reuters) - Seven-year-old Heaven Sutton was selling cold drinks and candy at a street stand with her mother when she was shot to death, becoming the 253rd victim this year of Chicago's surging murder rate, police said on Thursday.
Sutton and her mother, Ashake Banks, were about to close up their stand on Wednesday night when two men approached and began shooting. Heaven was shot in the chest, and a 19-year-old man standing nearby was wounded in the leg, police said.
"This is not about crime. This is about values. Take your gang conflict away from a 7-year-old," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel angrily told reporters.

So all that “Dead Fish” had to say was to move the “gang conflict” to another venue?!? Shows his mentality indeed.
I gotta ask though, what was a 7 year old girl doing out after 10:00 PM at night?

The little girl’s mother, Ashake Banks, 38, said she opened a candy stand on the street of her North Austin block two weeks ago to keep children close to their homes and away from gang violence.
But about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, gunshots sounded on one end of the block, sending children running for safety. Heaven raced toward her house but was hit.
“I figured (gang members) know us. They wouldn’t come to the neighborhood and start shooting, but they really didn’t even care,” the girl’s mother said. “She looked forward every day to opening up the candy store, and for somebody just to come take her life, it’s not right.”
Police said the area around Heaven’s home in the 1700 block of North Luna Avenue has seen tension lately between two street gangs: the Mafia Insane Vice Lords and the Four Corner Hustlers. The two gangs are known to have disputes with each other and often have internal conflicts.
What a terrible loss.

It is summer. Gets dark late anyway. Cools off after sun goes down. My kids were out past dark last night...it had cooled down...shooting hoops in the driveway using the garage light etc.
They need another blizzard!

At seven, my kids were in bed by 8:00 pm.
Outside on the street at 10:45 pm? No way.
I am constantly amazed at the parents I see on television saying, “Little Tyke (5 years old) was outside playing by the street by himself the last I saw him. Then he was gone...”

The Great Society was a HUGE success. Raised the black illegitimacy rate from 15 to 75%.
Plenty of Iraq vets with lots of urban warfare experience would volunteer to end these ‘gang’ problems rather quickly.
And repeatedly should they reemerge. No cop union required.
Shame all around, - - but 10:45 seems a bit late for a 7-year old anywhere, let alone in a gangland environment.
Do any other US cities even come close to 253 murders by late June?
Makes me cry. Absolutey a tragic and senseless loss of an innocent young girl. My heart breaks for her mom.
Unreal. I live in a similar-sized city and it’s considered a crisis if we get more than 50 murders all year.
Note that he didn’t talk about how awful it is that gang members use guns to settle their issues.
Yet one lawful citizen defending themselves with a gun, and all of a sudden its so terrible that people use guns for their own defense.
The only time they want ot get rid of guns is when a citizen protects themselves with one.
I swear if an armed citizen would have stepped in and got these thugs before the girl was shot, the whole focus of the libtards would be how wrong and awful it was a citizen had a gun and used it.
When I was that age it was quite common during the summer to play hide-and-seek at that hour. Not so late considering that at this lattitude (within a couple of degrees of Chicago), sunset was close to 9pm with another hour of twilight after that.
Detroit maybe, unless it’s depopulated to the point where there aren’t enough victims to go around.
I remember when I was seven I was in bed at 8-8:30 pm.
