indal: Ruling could force people to eat tofu and drive hybrid cars By Elise Viebeck - 06/29/12 12:14 PM ET

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) said Thursday's "frightening" Supreme Court ruling could lead to penalties for Americans whose lives are out of step with government priorities.

On a call with reporters, Jindal said that the decision to uphold the healthcare law as a tax is a "blow to our freedoms."

"What's next?" he said, expressing concern for people who "refuse to eat tofu" or "refuse to drive a Chevy Volt" — a popular hybrid car.

The court explicitly said the mandate was not constitutional as a regulation of commerce.

Jindal's remarks echoed the now-infamous "broccoli" comments made during oral arguments in the case. Notably, conservative Justice Antonin Scalia wondered whether mandating the purchase of health insurance could lead the government to mandate other purchases, too.

"Everybody has to buy food sooner or later, so you define the market as food," Scalia said. "Therefore, everybody is in the market; therefore, you can make people buy broccoli."

Broccoli received several mentions in Thursday's ruling. In one instance, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg called Scalia's argument "the broccoli horrible" and dismissed the slippery-slope logic as "specious."

Jindal said he expects opposition to the law to "escalate" before November and that Republican governors will wait for the outcome of the election before implementing the law.

Eat Tofu and drive a hybrid?

I’d rather be dead.

He should be President.

Yes, the ruling says that Obamacare can’t regulate commerce.

But..if it’s a health issue, I think they CAN “tax” us into doing specific things “for health” like they do all the good things “for the children”.

An extra Federal tax on restaurant dishes containing beef or the haraam pork, a tax on people deemed “overweight”, a tax on people threatening the public health by being a licensed, registered firearms owner, or the owner of ammunition. A tax added to speeding tickets, a tax for not having certain required safety features in your car.

Yep, Congress and the President can force or prevent you to buy or be unable to by anything by calling it a tax, and tax evasion is punishable by prison.

Americans are now slaves to the government.

People who eat tofu cause more carbon emissions than cars.

Now he has another idea...

I guarantee that down the road, smokers, meat eaters, and overweight people will pay higher taxes or will be denied insurance once the government is running it. Of course homosexuals, who are sicker than a 400 pounder that smokes, eats 5 cheeseburgers per day, and shoots heroin, will never pay more.

I'd rather be killing the person (or people) who think that they are going to make me eat tofu and/or drive a hybrid..

...and from the looks of it, we are coming to this bridge very quickly....

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking about all morning, right down to the hybrid cars. It’s a real can of worms. Can’t believe Roberts voted as he did.

There is no limit to what we can be forced to do now... Buy carbon credits, buy Solyndra solar panels, and for people with incomes over $100,000, say, they must install in-law suites in their homes and make them available to qualified welfare cases, thus cutting down on urban blight, etc. No limit. Absolutely no limit.

This cannot go on. The country is near the tipping point.

“What’s next?” he said, expressing concern for people who “refuse to eat tofu” or “refuse to drive a Chevy Volt” —a popular hybrid car.

The Volt is “popular”......? That is more shocking than the scotus decision.

“And always wear the happy face”

I do not know about that one. Libs are some of the most miserable, hateful, angry people I have ever seen. They rarely smile but do have this kind of evil smirk.

Maybe we could put it on a T’shirt and sell it. Give the profits to freerepublic. The evil smirk of the libs.

Not totally out of the realm of possibility. See Bloomberg.

The country is near the tipping point.

I think that ship already sailed. Dearborn is already under Muslim rule, and Arizona has been deeded to the Sinaloa Cartel.

I'm just waiting for our Aristocracy to announce the titles of our new Dictator King and his Magistrates.

Jindal opens our side to ridicule at the mention of tofu. I do believe there is a real possibility that hybrids, energy efficient appliances (with ever changing standard as to what that means), solar panels, triple-glazed replacement windows, R50 insulation, etc. will eventually be mandated.

Our politcal class appears to have ZERO interest in increasing our nations energy production. Conservation will be mandated.
