A top surrogate for President Obama insisted Friday that the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act was not a tax despite the fact that the Supreme Court narrowly preserved the law on those grounds.
"Don't believe the hype that the other side is selling," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick told reporters on a conference call.
"This is a penalty," Patrick said. "It's about dealing with the freeloaders."
The Supreme Court upheld the entirety of the health care law Thursday on narrow grounds, declaring that the individual mandate was legal under Congress' taxing powers.
In the wake of the decision, Republicans and conservatives have accused Obama of raising taxes. Radio host Rush Limbaugh called the act "nothing more than the largest tax increase in the history of the world" on Thursday.

We penalize people with taxes. We punish successful people. It’s what redistribution is all about.
Will America tolerate it... again?
That means that it can be eliminated with reconciliation.
Freeloaders is what the entire law is about!
So since it was allowed by the USSC because it was a tax, and they are saying it wasn’t a tax, does that mean then that it is unconstitutional since it’s being argued that it’s not a tax?
I guess this all depends on what is is.
Interesting. So when ObamaCare is repealed with 51 votes in the Senate, are the Dems going to drag us back to the Supreme Court who will then say what?
Lets see who’s laughing in November...
The Senate rules on filibuster are procedural; they have no effect on a law’s validity once passed.
It is institutionalized slavery enforced by the IRS. The Governments power to tax us must be severely limited. IRS agents everywhere must be deprived of jobs and policing power.
Nice try, Nebbish.
You're still reaching into my pocket and grabbing my wallet, no matter what YOU deign to call it, and by your very action, attracting freeloaders like flies
It's not about "freeloaders", and the libs have admitted that. It's about shifting costs to the young by forcing them to buy insurance they don't want with expensive coverage that they don't need at their age. The Court just confirmed that this is a tax, and the libs have admitted that it's intended to get the young to pay for the lazy and for illegals (not for the elderly who have Medicare, for the poor who have Medicaid, or for pregnant women and for children who are also already covered). Liberals are taxing their most loyal voting age and killing the economy to make it harder for the young to find jobs.
How can you tax the absence of something?
Tax not buying vegetables?
Affordable health care?????? is this a joke???? in 2016 a family will have to pay $2095 thats affordble?? again how will the illegals pay for this tax?????? how will they track them???? oh wait I know he will give amnesty to the 17 million!!!!! before the election....
Well then, Obamacare is a suggestion, not the law...
