Rangel results still unsettled

It’s been a day and a half since the New York polls closed and there’s still some confusion over the exact outcome of Rep. Charlie Rangel’s Democratic primary.

The Associated Press results came to a standstill early Wednesday morning with 84 percent of the 13th District’s 506 precincts reporting and Rangel owning a 45.2 percent to 39.8 percent advantage over state Sen. Adriano Espaillat, the second-place finisher.

By late afternoon Wednesday, though, the results had narrowed considerably: With 94 percent of precincts in, Rangel’s lead was down to 44 percent to 41 percent, with 1,032 votes separating the candidates according to the AP.

Espaillat’s campaign issued a cautiously worded statement suggesting maybe the race wasn’t as settled as everyone thought. Rangel’s camp issued its own statement expressing confidence that “at the conclusion of this process we will be victorious.”

I think Espaillat has conceded the race. In any event it takes a win of less than 1/2 of 1% to require a recount. The speculation I’ve read doesn’t believe with the outstanding ballots left that the numbers will be there for a recount.

From another article:

On Tuesday, Espaillat sent a note to supporters, thanking them and conceding the race.

“Though we didn’t make it to the finish line tonight, the values we fought for and the communities we seek to improve will continue to light a fire in us,” he said. “The truth is, even in coming a bit short, we made history.”

Some minor adjustments need to be made, but when those adjustments add up to Charlie Rangel winning the results will be announced.

How about counting all of the votes before we start declaring election or primary winners?

Rep. Rangel margin shrinks in NY primary win

City Board of Elections spokeswoman Valerie Vazquez said absentee ballots would start being opened July 5.

It was unclear how many absentee ballots had been sent out, but Lynch said he thought it unlikely that there would be enough votes for Espaillat to overtake Rangel.

Khan said there are about 1,000 affidavit ballots that still need to be counted, too. Those are from voters who showed up at the polls, but whose right to vote at a certain polling station may have been questioned.

Once again Rangel’s people reinforce their position on the human bell curve.

It would be fine if only those people who vote based upon race were affected by their stupidity but in our system everyone loses.

Given the blatant race and sexual orientation based decisions out of our current administration we should be able to see a very dim future for this country as these people become more influential in government.

What we are seeing is exactly why the founders did NOT want a pure democracy. The race pendulum had been in the middle of extremes for quite a few years but now Rangel’s people are pushing it to their side so arm yourselves and be prepared.

Yep need to continue counting but your article also indicated the following which the final count will prove one way or the other. I think Espaillat is just facing reality. JMO.

“The assumption being made here is that all of the absentee ballots will break one way, and that’s usually impossible,” said.

It’s not who votes that counts—it’s who counts the votes.
