In an attempt to lower crime and raise government revenue, Uruguay is planning on legalizing marijuana. Currently, it is legal to possess less than 25 grams of cannabis, but it is illegal to grow or sell it.
If the proposal passes, Uruguays government would oversee the growth and distribution of the $75 million business. Buyers would be required to register with the government.
Its a fight on both fronts: against consumption and drug trafficking, said defense minister Eleuterio Fernandez Huidobro. We think the prohibition of certain drugs is creating more problems for society than the drugs themselves.
Congress must approve the proposal, but Julio Calzada, secretary-general of the National Drugs Board in Uruguay, thinks there is a good chance it will pass. We have hopes that legislators from all four parties can support the measure, he said.
But some marijuana users have a different opinion. People who consume are not going to buy it from the state, said marijuana smoker Natalia Pereira. Theyre going to be mistrust buying it from a place where you have to register and they can typecast you.
Nope, US since birth
Just asking due to the way you spelled legalised instead of legalized.
How does this fight consumption? And there will still be scofflaws who traffic illegally (unlicensed). So there will still be a drug war against those who don't pay "their fair share" to Big Government (users and growers).
If you want to drain the swamp (remove druggies from society) to get rid of the alligators (drug dealers) you have to drain the water (lure the druggies) somewhere. Uruguay sounds like it would be a good drain far from us.
It will be interesting to see what happens.

I often get my z and s mixed up. I usually spell Brasil instead of the z.
That’s how to spell it in Portuguese.
Yeah, I lived in Brasil for a while.
‘Draining the swamp’ in the U.S. is an impossible task.
Its a proven fact that long-term marijuana use decays the brain.
...and the proof is?
Frankly, the need to use mind altering substances in order to tolerate life is a bit stupid, IMHO, but then one has to contemplate that alcohol remains legal, and has serious long term physically debilitating results if carried to the point of alcoholism. The seriously LESS debilitating and unproven long term physical destruction of Marijuana remains in question.
What is it in comparison that would justify the one being legal and the other banned by government?
Cool, how did you like it?
I’d enthusiastically embrace letting the United States government go into the marijuana business if it could be staffed 100% by liberals who would resign their positions of power in all other branches of government.
Draining the swamp in the U.S. is an impossible task.
Correct - as is removing users of the drug alcohol. Now, we did manage to get rid of the violent criminals profiting off alcohol - and the way we did that was to legalize that drug.
Not me. But I would enthusiastically embrace letting United States citizens go into the marijuana business and requiring the United States government to mind its own business.
How about meth and crack cocaine? Real libertarians want those to be publicly available too. Are you are a real libertarian loon or only halfway?
I was real young, it was back in the ‘50s. Things were way different than now. I would certainly like to re-visit it now though. I do remember getting it wrong when I spelled it with an s after we moved back to the states. For some reason, the s seems better than the z.
How do you know real libertarians want that? Is it published somewhere?
How about meth and crack cocaine?
I think the prudent course is to legalize only marijuana at first, and revisit the questions you raise in (say) five years or so when we've had a chance to see how it worked. In my opinion, banning any drug does more harm than the drug itself - and I think the results of marijuana legalization would bear that out.
Real libertarians want those to be publicly available too. Are you are a real libertarian loon or only halfway?
I neither know nor care which (if any) of your labels I fit.
I know a loony libertarian when I see one. A libertarian who wants legal marijuana which will create more Democrat voters. Democrats are salivating at the prospect. Make more stoned Obama voters! Not that you silly goofs give a crap. You have a big crusade to fight. Your heroic struggle to get intoxicated by an alien drug
Alcohol is mentioned in the Bible and is part of the Western tradition. Pot is alien to all this. So is meth which is synthetic and an outright poison and so is crack cocaine. Why not make (also synthetic) LSD legal! Let it all hang out! Make more Obama voters!

The Pusher
Steppenwolf Lyrics
[ from Easy Rider Soundtrack ]
You know I’ve smoked a lot of grass
O’ Lord, I’ve popped a lot of pills
But I never touched nothin’
That my spirit could kill
You know, I’ve seen a lot of people walkin’ ‘round
With tombstones in their eyes
But the pusher don’t care
Ah, if you live or if you die
God damn, The Pusher
God damn, I say The Pusher
I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man
You know the dealer, the dealer is a man
With the love grass in his hand
Oh but the pusher is a monster
Good God, he’s not a natural man
The dealer for a nickel
Lord, will sell you lots of sweet dreams
Ah, but the pusher ruin your body
Lord, he’ll leave your, he’ll leave your mind to scream
God damn, The Pusher
God damn, God damn the Pusher
I said God damn, God, God damn The Pusher man
Well, now if I were the president of this land
You know, I’d declare total war on The Pusher man
I’d cut him if he stands, and I’d shoot him if he’d run
Yes I’d kill him with my Bible and my razor and my gun
God damn The Pusher
Gad damn The Pusher
I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man
Says who?
There is not a single recorded case of cannabis causing any damage to the brain or body. Nor is there even a single recorded case of permanent changes of any kind to the body. Even when abused, there is no such thing as toxicity or physical addiction when it comes to cannabis. It has not even been conclusively proven to cause dangerous impairment in drivers. The only conclusive side effect is lung damage and that can easily be avoided by eating or vaporizing cannabis. And don't forget the vast industrial benefits of legal hemp.
Alcohol, on the other hand, is 100% undoubtedly toxic and highly physically addictive. If you consume enough alcohol, it is 100% medically guaranteed to rot your brain and every other organ. The liver is critical and usually goes first so you rarely get to witness the full brain rot. Countless people literally die from alcohol poisoning every year. Alcohol is so addictive that one can die from the withdrawal. Not even heroin withdrawal can do this.
