Madison - A second state lawmaker is pulling his name from an effort to intervene in a lawsuit over the state's photo ID law.
Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester), the influential co-chairman of the Legislature's budget committee, said he was withdrawing his name from a motion filed in the case after questions were raised about whether he was violating state ethics law by accepting legal help in making the filing. Rep. Bob Ziegelbauer (I-Manitowoc), who also had signed on to the motion, withdrew from it earlier this week.
Vos acknowledged a finding by state officials that receiving legal help on the motion would run afoul of the ethics law.
"The initial guidance that I received from the Government Accountability Board provided me the opportunity to intervene in the case. Upon further review, the GAB went in a different direction in its final ruling," he said in a statement. "I continue to support the efforts in this lawsuit and hope we can do everything possible to preserve the integrity of the election process."
Reid Magney, a spokesman for the Accountability Board, said he couldn't comment beyond saying that the first guidance Vos had received was the letter sent to him by the agency Thursday. Vos said he wasn't able to provide a copy of the Accountability Board's letter, and the board is not allowed to release the letter on its own.
Scot Ross, executive director of the liberal group One Wisconsin Now, filed the complaint against Vos and Ziegelbauer based on a Journal Sentinel story that the two were declining to say who was funding their legal work.

A Madison-based appeals court is expected to decide the matter in the next year or so.

Wisconsin Voter ID setback
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
The appeal is still alive, so I presume it’s in van Hollen’s hands. I wonder what the intervenors were trying to add.
Maybe they were trying to stiffen Van Hollen’s spine. JBVH leaves a lot to be desired in n AG.
The case is one of four that have been filed against the state's voter ID law. One other judge has blocked the law, at least temporarily, and it is expected to remain blocked until at least some time after the November election.
Why would Robin Vos be pulling out???
Why would Robin Vos be pulling out???
He says it is because of legal requirements — the same reason Ziegelbauer pulled out earlier this week. The Dems were accusing them of some ethical violation. The suit goes forward, however. But, we’d hope that having a few legislators involved would push it forward faster. It seems that we now have to rely upon JBVH.
