Not sure this is the only free phone even, I believe there are a lot of “free” cell phones out there. Ask a friend who works in a public library, people come in all day long for info on these programs and endless ways to scam the system.

Government Unveils Cell Phone Alert System

http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2011/May/Government-Unveils-Cell-Phone-Alert-System/

“While cell phone users may opt out of alerts from local officials, no one will be allowed to opt out of messages from the president.”

Interesting, predictable and a little amusing. You can opt out of all the emergency alerts that .gov says are the reason to have this new system but you’ll not be able to turn off Dear Leader.

awhile ago I kept saying to myself, how do all these kids/people afford cell phones? I finally realized that they are FREE from the universal fee I pay on my bill. Absolutely I could scream and wonder what is going to be done about it? Now there are gangs formed on a minutes notice, free phones everywhere etc. It is outrageous!

Should we just turn off the lights now?

I really wonder if there is anyway back from this brink....

But the free obamaphones are needed to help these victims of society find a decent job and get off of welfare so they can work hard and buy their own phone. /s

This program started during the Bush years according to a caller on Levin’s show the other day.

You can get one from more than one carrier. I know someone that has three phones each for he and his wife. 250 minutes on each phone.

Who Pays for the Obama Phone? in Obama Phone Questions / no comments Lifeline is a government sponsored program, but who is paying for it. Some people claim that the government is using taxpayer’s money to run this program, however, the claim is false. Universal Service Fund (USF) which is administers by Federal Communication Commission along the Universal Service Administration Company (USAC), pays for the Lifeline phone assistance program.

Unbelievable. Where do they think this USF fee comes from, unicorn farts? The USF 'fee' is a required fee (technically not a tax because Congress didn't authorize it) on all telecommunication services that we all pay for. So yes, taxpayers are footing the bill.

Universal Service Fund

This was Al Gore's pet. Taxation w/o representation.
He simply announced it, and it was so.

Wish there was a way to hack into Obama’s Facebook and delete it. I am sure much of the people on there are from 2008 and wouldn’t re-join.

Q: Has the Obama administration started a program to use “taxpayer money” to give free cell phones to welfare recipients?

A: No. Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it.

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/

Let’s keep it real around here....

Government-provided cell phones is not a new program.

No it is not. They have been around for eight years that I know of.

There was a previous program that provide cell phones to the poor but they only dialed 911. Maybe that is where all the stupid calls to 911 come from?

There are also several charities that offer free cell phones and minutes.

I strongly object to the phrase "Obama phone" and will be contacting my congress critter because this is government funds being used to campaign which is against the law.

This is not new. The phones and the minutes are free to anyone who qualifies for Food Stamps and/or Medicaid. That’s a lot of phones.
