Boehner: If Supreme Court strikes down health care law, ‘there will be no spiking of the ball’

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's health care law within the next week, and House Speaker John Boehner has issued a pre-emptive warning to fellow House Republicans if parts of the law are struck down: Forget about celebrating.

In a memo sent to his entire caucus Friday, Boehner warned members not to gloat over what most Republicans would see as a victory.

"[I]f the Court strikes down all or part of the president's health care law, there will be no spiking of the ball," Boehner wrote in the memo. "Republicans are focused on the economy—and under President Obama's policies, our economy is struggling. We will not celebrate at a time when millions of our fellow Americans remain out of work, the national debt has exceeded the size of our nation's economy, health costs continue to rise, and small businesses are struggling to hire."

Well, if you think about it, it is Romney’s part of the health care plan that might get struck down - the individual mandate. They handicapped us when they nominated Mr. Progressive Romneycare.

Obama went Romney’s fascist route - central control over insurance companies rather than the Marxist road of single payer plan.

Since Milt is our candidate, we have nothing to say that is not embarassing.

I thought the TEARosaur always looked for an emotional moment? We'll spike the damn football and like it, with or without him.

I know it. Now we have to deal with this.

I agree with Boehner.

Focusing on the bad economy is eroding Zero's numbers.

If our side gets too ecstatic over an Obamacare win, we lose focus.

In other words, triumphalism will creep in too early before we really have a victory.

“Considering how well Obama has punked the Republicans, spiking the ball now would be like doing after a touchdown which got your score to 14-56. It isn’t time to spike. It’s time for an onside kick to try to get another touchdown.”

I fiercely disagree with this. Most everything else Obama’s done has been a one-off. Ignoring the defense of marriage act, overturning Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and amnesty may or may not stay in place. My guess is they will, and that we’re not going back on any issue, but anyway that’s more a matter of momentum. Obamacare was the big f-ing deal. It is the massive new bureacracy that we have to see in action before we know what it is. It was to be his legacy. It is different.

By the way, Obama’s punking pubs and being ahead on points has to do with socializing the nation, not the election. He is not ahead electionwise. He is stuck in it deep, largely because of the economy (stupid).

You'd better not celebrate, you spineless, useless pieces of trash in Congress who let this abomination go so far as to require a virtual rebellion by the many states to get it to the SCOTUS, whom you expect to DO YOUR FRICKIN WORK!

No action should have taken place in Congress while this idiotic and unconstitutional infringement was walking the land as law. The SCOTUS was not elected by the people to represent them. Theirs is a duty to represent the constitution, a job many of them have forgotten, but far more of our congresscritters forget whom they represent.

Apparently, he doesn’t have the slightest conception of what it means to be out of work. When life gives you lemons and you’re sick to death of lemonade, you grab what chance you can to celebrate. Spike the ball, dammit.

Seriously, anyone who says, “We will not celebrate at a time when millions of our fellow Americans remain out of work, the national debt has exceeded the size of our nation’s economy, health costs continue to rise, and small businesses are struggling to hire” is either playing politics—transparent and stupid politics—or is clinically depressed and needs medication.

"Playing politics"? No. It's "working politics" and in Washington, that's not something to be contemptuous about.

It's what you're there for -- to think not just about the moment, but about what to do next and how to get it done.

He's right. You don't throw a big public party over one judicial victory when the country's still in trouble -- unless you're some sort of narcissist.

If you actually have a role to play in the political system, you've got more important things to do than to put on a funny hat and congratulate yourself.

If you don't have those responsibilities, do what you want. It doesn't matter and nobody cares.

God willing, and the Supreme Court throws out DeathCare, I, for one, will be praying to God giving thanks for saving so many innocent American lives from those that want to destroy us. Kind of like my parents thanking God when Hitler was defeated. IMO, same thing.

Just saying!

Sure, don’t spike the ball, but give Pelosi a big poke in the eye when you get close to her, Boner.
