Mitt Romney Says He Could Wage War on Iran Without Congress' Approval
The Alatnic ^ | June 20th, 2012 | Conor Friedersdorf

Posted on 06/20/2012 6:59:50 PM PDT by Mozilla

On Face the Nation on Sunday, Mitt Romney said that if elected president he wouldn't have to get congressional permission for a military strike on Iran.

To quote him directly (emphasis added):

I can assure you if I'm president, the Iranians will have no question but that I will be willing to take military action if necessary to prevent them from becoming a nuclear threat to the world. I don't believe at this stage, therefore, if I'm president that we need to have a war powers approval or special authorization for military force. The president has that capacity now. I understand that some in the Senate for instance have written letters to the president indicating you should know that a containment strategy is unacceptable. We cannot survive a course of action which would include a nuclear Iran we must be willing to take any and all actions.

All those actions must be on the table.

Keep in mind, folks, this is very likely for Iran’s consumption. It’s to draw a distinction between himself and the simpering, appeasing little POS in the WH now.

The US has fought hundreds of wars, exactly how many depends on what you classify as a war.

We have formally declared war exactly 5 times, and not since 1941.

I don't recall Reagan getting approval before his strikes on Libya in 1986.

There are other ways of dealing with Iran that Obama has been wasting in all the wrong places.

In Iran we should arm the opposition but only if we’re willing to accept the long term consequences. However, arming the Irani opposition is a lot smarter than arming the radicals in Libya.

I have no problem with this statement. But it does seem curious for Romney to have made it. It seems very out of character since he is usually so safe in his actions and statements.

The Romney statement is one more example of egotistical proclivity for presidential FIAT, where the people’s representatives are circumvented entirely and their support assumed in order to justify a strike on another nation with our husbands, sons and relatives used at the tip of the spear.

Yes, there are events that may deserve a strike, but if it is so deserving and obvious and justified, then Congress needs its own voice to offer or reject their support.

Romney and Obama have entirely too much already in common and records to prove it. This is one more insight into the psychology of privilege, for unfettered power.

The gaggle who will vote for these two deserve them both and will be reaping exactly what they sew.

God, be with us. We are finished and in danger.

All we need to do with Iran is step out of Israel’s way. In fact, if we want to help we can refuel their jets and let them use our carriers.

Correct. The only thing helping Romney is that Obama is his opponent.

[Some times ya just need to keep ur mouth shut.]

Or you need to run it wide open. Nixon said he had a “secret plan” to end the Vietnam War. At the same time his campaign was leaking to foreign diplomats that Nixon was a “mad man” on the issue of North Vietnam and may be planning a nuclear strike.

After Reagan was elected but before he was inaugurated his staff told several nationally syndicated columnists that the American hostages in Iran might have to be sacrificed in the retaliation he had planned against Iran. The plan was to attack Iran's industrial sector and oil depots with ballistic missiles from offshore.

..and loan them a couple of extra bombs for good measure.

A couple like this

Its a stupid scary world and getting worse every second of every day.

...But it would take less than 48 hours, and our troops should be well outta there within the 60 day time limit of the war Powers Act.

...but yeah. Best to just keep mum about it.

I do appreciate your point. It’s a good one to make.

Romney was into excessive governance in MA and to hear an excessive statement gives no ease to the people, given this excessive fiat business going on by the current president has just about run out of field with the people.

I know I’ve had it with excessive governance, and ‘am actually not going to comply and cooperate any longer.

if Iran has the bomb and can put it on American soil, all of our boys will be on the front line and the line will be in the USA.

That has been a goal of Iran, IQ, Taliban and the Muslim Brotherhood for many, many years.

The House of Representatives has been funding nefarious ways and means of this administration and their thugs and czars way past their expiration date, haven’t they.
