EDITORIAL: Egypt’s coup: It’s about time

Military control keeps Islamic militants at bay

The soft coup in Egypt over the past week shouldn’t have surprised anyone. The only reason it wasn’t harder and faster was because the secularist generals know the Muslim Brotherhood has a friend in the White House.

Egypt’s armed forces are an elite class with special power, privileges and important economic interests it wants to retain. Despite everything that was at stake over the recent chaotic months, the generals couldn’t simply send in the tanks to do a Tiananmen Squaredance on the dissidents. The whole world was watching; the loyalty of the troops wasn’t guaranteed; and the Obama administration was cheering on the Islamic revolution. Instead, ailing President Hosni Mubarak, a long-standing U.S. ally who was put on life support Tuesday, was thrown under the bus, a transition government was set up and reforms were promised.

Appearances to the contrary, the military was never serious about surrendering power. The main problem the generals have been facing is time. They are trying to wait out President Obama. They know there is a U.S. election in November that may elevate Republican Mitt Romney, who isn’t fixated on ensuring the success of the Muslim Brotherhood. At the same time, they cannot be certain Mr. Obama will be defeated and thus cannot simply reassert military rule overtly, risking future billions in U.S. aid.

Exactly. And maybe they got tired of having to go out and rescue naive women who turned out to demonstrate in Tahiri Square and promptly got dragged off to be groped, beaten or even raped by the Muslim Brotherhood supporters. That's not a really positive image for a country.

You're right. They're both inept in regards to foreign policy, probably most everything else too.

Nonsense. It was planned by the State Dept through
the pens of Hillary, Obama, and CODE Pink,
with the help of Ayers and Dohrn.

This has been planned by the DNC to destroy every
iota of freedom in the middle east for Islam,
the religion of the tyrant Moslem pRes_ _ent.

The Moslem Communist coup d’etat in the USA is expanding.

If the Egyptian military puts down the Muslim Bros, how much you want to bet Obama will want to bomb them?

All I can remember from history was carter’s non-support for the shah of iran.

that led to multiple probems.

when dealing with muslims we ought to have some sense.

sorry, don’t believe alot of this is going to come out good.

we are dealing with islamo-fascists.

Carter's siding with the Islamic radicals was a disaster and Obama’s siding with them will turn out no different.

The analysis starts too late. The reason the “arab spring” took hold in Egypt is BECAUSE the Egyptian military LET it happen. They wanted rid of Mubarak and his clan — probably because some senior officers thought it was their turn to rape the country. So they let the Muslim Brotherhood put the bodies in Tahir Square until Mubarek was safely gone. Now they are completing Phase 2: putting the Muslim Brotherhood back into their box.

The Muslim Brotherhood was cannon fodder used to smoke-out loyalist military units who might have supported Mubarek.

I think people (Military) much smarter than Bambi will say “shove it” Egypt has 80 million people, and at least 30 million want nothing to do with the Muslim Brotherhood.

It's a blood letting that Bambi can not survive.
