HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A southeast Houston family was in shock Saturday night after one of their loved ones was shot and killed in what is being called a tragic accident.
The Jackson family was gathering at a home in the 4600 block of Kingsbury Street near Wayland when they say a man's gun accidentally went off and shot his sister.
It happened around 5pm.
Rochelle Jackson, 24, and her brother, Rondrick, were going to a family picnic around 5pm. Police say Rochelle was standing in the driveway and Rondrick was walking into the house, holding a holstered pistol in his hands.
"The pistol fell out of the holster. When it hit the ground, it discharged one time, hitting the sister in the head and it killed her instantly," HPD Homicide Investigator Bart Oxspring said. "Right now we're treating this as an accident, but we're still interviewing anybody."

Color me skeptical.
I suppose in the movie version after the gun shot her, she will be run over by an SUV. Add in some clowns and it's a Stephen King movie...
It can happen with older guns that are chambered and cocked. The original 1911 had no firing pin crossbar and could fire if dropped the right way. This has since been fixed with the 1911A1 and Series 70 and 80 1911s....there are also probably a lot of revolvers out there that may do this if dropped with the hammer cocked.
I won’t comment about Glocks, even though I own 5 of them.
Suffice it to say, I don’t consider them the safest of weapons regardless of the “don’t touch the trigger safety and it won’t go off crap.” I’ve never been disposed to try it out.
Everyone knows a holstered pistol, in your hands, is a very important piece of family picnic equipment. They probably planned to have many beers and shoot cockroaches.
Rondrick must have some enemies. I don’t think many people would carry a holstered gun to a family picnic. It’s a shame his sister died.
Cripes! I always wanted to be named Rondrick!!!! Damn!
The most common accident involving a Glock used to be when a police officer had their finger inside the trigger guard and then attempted to holster the pistol.
I call BS too...
When it hit the ground, it discharged one time, hitting the sister in the head and it killed her instantly
Well I’m wondering if she got one of Obama’s “fair shots”?
“I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, when everyone plays by the same rules.”
Tragic story but I hate it when reporters write that a gun "accidentally" went off. This leads people to believe that firearms are defective and unsafe.
What happened, with 99.9% certainty, was that Rodrick pulled the trigger of a loaded weapon and it functioned exactly as it was designed to. If it was an accident, it was because Rodrick was negligent in clearing the weapon before he pulled the trigger. Firearm Safety 101.
Like I said....five of them (17, 2-19s, 21, 26) and I don’t trust them when push comes to shove...despite all the internal safeguards stuff.
I guess I should read before posting.
Still, I'm skeptical. Guns sold today are designed to be dropped and not go off. Wondering if this was the story he told the cops?
From as best as I can tell it looks like a Glock 17. So yeah I doubt the drop story.
It is a healthy attitude not to trust mechanical safeties.
As you have five, do you trust them for defensive purposes?
It’s possible he tried to catch the falling gun and ended up pulling the trigger.
Yes, they shoot well and consistently if you don’t have a don’t have a limp wrist like Obama. Limpwristing can cause a stovepipe jam.....
That said, if you count by sheer numbers how much I like a gun, then the 1911/A1 would have to be it by near a factor of two...my latest (as of today for Fathers Day) is a Ruger SR1911 with an inside the waistband holster (Ruger Logo, of course) from Mitch Rosen....a sweet gun.
Those damn guns just keep going off by themselves killing people. When will it stop? HUGE SARC..............

Looks like he had the Plaxico Burris problem with a Glock.
I treat my Glocks like revolvers with a 5.5 lb trigger.
