Katsuya Takahashi, a former Aum Supreme Truth cult member sought over the March 1995 sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway system, was arrested Friday in Tokyo after 17 years on the run....

The arrest of the last Aum member on a special wanted list marks a new chapter in the investigation of a series of crimes allegedly committed by the cult that shocked and horrified the nation, including sarin gas attacks in Tokyo and Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, and the sending of a parcel bomb addressed to the then Tokyo governor.

The Chiyoda subway line was part of my daily morning commute into work - probably just missed being a victim of Aum's Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system on March 20th, 1995.

This freak should have fled to Brazil permanently and lost himself in the large Japanese community there. No extradition.

I didn’t realize any of these guys were still at large. I remember coming up to Yokosuka from Sasebo about a week after the attacks and being a little nervous about riding the trains.

My wife and kids were on the train. My daughter got sick to her stomach so they got off the train before the attack.

When I think...

One guy on the wanted poster turned himself in late last year, and they caught the woman just a couple of weeks ago. I think they got this guy through information from her.

Aum's Sarin - now that's an oldie. The internet had just got started up when they were still making news.

There was some serious concern these guys were involved in some sort of effort to steal or manufacture an atom bomb ~ either in Japan or Australia.

Amazing..! I was on the Hibiya-sen..!

My bike parked illegally close to my station had been confiscated, and I was going to retrieve it.

It wasn’t my usual line.

They were even kookier than they let on in this article:

They’d somehow bought a huuuuge Mi-26 helicopter and had designs to gas all of Tokyo. They also had tried to buy —of all things— a nuclear-powered Oscar-class submarine. And they were trying to manufacture Ak-47’s and had been training some nutty attack corps with airsoft replicas.

The lawyer who’d tried to prosecute them? They abducted his whole family, chopped them up and cooked them in an industrial microwave to get rid of the evidence.

Sounds made-up, huh? It’s even kookier than THAT.

The concerns about the atom bomb had a special reason:

Aum was Japanese but recruitment efforts were more successful in Russia than in Japan —they had one believer who worked in a sensitive Russian weapons lab at a time when things in Russia were considerably more in flux than now.

Their aim was Armageddon —their teachings laid it out very plainly.
