Box Office Flops For Tom Cruise’s ‘Rock Of Ages’
Deadline ^ | 6/15/12 | NIKKI FINKE

-snip-

New Line/Warner Bros’ Rock Of Ages (3,470 theaters) is falling to earth with a thud. Which Hollywood expected because the pic had been tracking poorly for weeks (and even went down at one point week to week). The studio felt the 1980s period piece was a hard sell to younger moviegoers. I suspect the problem was casting. Russell Brand has been repellant to moviegoers, while Tom Cruise as iconic rocker proved just too incredulous for audiences.

Less ticket sales, less donations to Obama/Pelosi. Less money for their destroy-America agenda. A good thing.

The casting was odd, but I blame the title of the movie.

A bad title can kill a movie or television show.

That’s what killed Firefly and Terriers.

Only great publicity and a good show saved The Good Wife from being killed by the horrible name.

I thought it was a religious movie myself, until I saw some reviews.

Same here. Just no interest in seeing that actor in anything.

I thought this was actually a good role and Cruise was good enough in it that I couldn't figure out who it was though I recognized the actor.

If you aren't a Scientologist, you might not get it.

When you have a 50+ year old being a “rocker” and a 60+ year guys with long hair thinking he’s eighteen - fail.

The Beach Boys have a new album out! When I last saw them in the 1980’s, they could barely make it up to the mikes (and the Oak Ridge Boys were tearing it up..) A friend went to a much more recent show, and not only did every band member have a backup artist to play their music, but most never even bothered to pretend to be playing or singing. Just sat on stage to collect their money, then shuffle off.

The premise of ‘taking a stroll down memory lane’ to the 1980’s with ‘stars that were relevant to that period’ looks ok on paper - such a formula might even have a shot at working. Then a marketing blitz for months and months - I've seen dozens of posters for this, malls virtually converted into Rock of Ages ‘shrines’, but, wow, I had no idea Tom Cruise was in the movie, that the movie was oriented towards the 1980’s rock set, etc.

If you had asked me what the movie was about, I'd say it was some sort of movie version of American Idol, and I wasn't going to see it. Now that I know more about it, eh, I've seen enough Tom Cruise for my lifetime. Tom Cruise as a rocker? Wait, did you NOT see Top Gun? Out of tune horrid singing? Are you NUTS???

So I just asked the wife, ‘who's in the movie?’ Russell Brand and some other big stars, don't remember who. ‘What's the movie about?’ 1980’s rock band getting back together and going on the road. ‘Do you want to see it?’ No.

My daughter: I don't know, some kind of old people movie, retro style and no.

So there you go. Russell Brand in some tight pants, some other people, about getting the band back together for one more go. Congratulations, Hollywood, on your multi-million dollar ad buy.

alec baldwin is enough to keep me away. he’s one of those actors who always seems to horn his way into what might be another wise tolerable film, kind of like woodyharrelson who ALWAYS plays a psychoticrightwingnut in whatever film he mooches off of

I haven't seen the movie, but just from seeing the advertisements it looks like they took the (very good) musical that started off-broadway and totally ruined its feel. It is set in a small, dirty financially failing rock club with talented wannabes in the musical. It looks like Hollywood watched the movie version of “Tommy” (The Who) and thought what had been done was a GOOD idea. Blech.

Isn't there only one original Beach Boy still alive? That could explain having a "backup artist" play their instruments. ;-)

You have to be pretty tolerant to see any movies so I try not to cross people off.

But Alec Baldwin, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, and that nasty little guy who played Milk, also tim robbins and his not wife... just some of those I will not go to see.

There is one Wilson brother alive, Dennis and Carl are deceased.

Mike Love is an original member along with Brian Wilson. The other band members have been there a long time (and away a long time).

Glenn Campbell took over for Brian Wilson when he stopped touring in the mid-60s and also played on the albums. He is not involved in this tour as he is going through his own retirement tour with his kids.
