WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.
The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was to announce the new policy Friday, one week before President Barack Obama plans to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' annual conference in Orlando, Fla. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak to the group on Thursday.
Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be immune from deportation if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed. The officials who described the plan spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it in advance of the official announcement.

This is why operation frugal is so important right now. Stop spending. Stop buying. Stop working overtime. Everything you buy or earn has a tax. That tax money feeds the beast. Now is not the time to send Washington, or any other big government official, another healthy meal.
Starve the beast. Let the crises work for us this time. Let us be the ones people cry out to, so WE can do something about it.

What a great post, and of course you’re exactly right. Someone is going to freak out about this and do something stupid, and then all of us will be labeled extremists. I just want to see Congress get together and firmly say NO to this exercise of Chicago-style politics on a national level.

They face deportation along with their parents. I have no sympathy for lawbreakers. Under the Dream Act, these “children” could be up to 35 years old. And why should we be be authorizing work permits while 23 million legal residents of this country are looking for jobs.?
He did an end around on the Constitution with his recess appointments and congress did nothing. No reason to think our gelded majority will speak up on this aside from some chest thumping righteous indignation on Meet the Press.
They are all criminals. Not only have they entered our country illegally, they are working illegally, committing ID theft, avoiding taxes, using illegal SSNs, etc.
This is high treason. Period.

My 79 year old Mother, Betty Geissler, died Feb 4th. She is the one who started me in FR. She registered after I showed her how but never made a post. Read FR hourly for many years. She was a prayer warrior before there were prayer warriors. As much as I miss her I am glad she didn’t have to witness this idiot taking our country down the toilet. It would have driven her mad. I know she is rolling over in her grave as we speak. I am waiting in EAGER anticipation to a response from Congress and eventually SCOTUS. At least properly taxed and regulated marijuana would increase this country’s coffers while a bunch of illegals may or may not, depending on whether they break some more laws.
Agreed, and yes, a good post — No, we should not panic, but it would be nice to see OUR representatives, whom WE elect, to represent US, stand up for US and firmly and calmly put a stop to this dictatorial, delusional lunatic.
