WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.
The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was to announce the new policy Friday, one week before President Barack Obama plans to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' annual conference in Orlando, Fla. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak to the group on Thursday.
Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be immune from deportation if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed. The officials who described the plan spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it in advance of the official announcement.

I’m not a very smart man, but this is treason.
I hate Obama more than I can begin to articulate.
He’s desperate for votes..
Next up: Marijuana legalization
Back door amnesty from the Kenyan. They’ll be coming across in herds now.
Maybe this is Obama’s “October Surprise” a few months early.
This is impeachable. Too bad we don’t have men in Congress to do it. Just....., well I won’t say.
Romney needs to be sure to remind the Latino community that Obama has already deported 1,500,000 Mexicans back to Mexico prior to this election year stunt.
Told ya so.
Completely unconstitutional to bypass Congress like this. Obama doens’t care though- even if the Supreme Court strikes it down he will have scored his political points with Hispanics.
Will be interesting to see Romney’s response.
The campaign is drowning a flailing desperately.
LLS
The union goons will be loving this. A whole new mob of workers for them to extort money from.
Can anyone imagine what message this sends to those wishing to enter this country illegally or legally? We are inviting more illegal immigration. It is irresponsible.
Obama is operating outside the law. He is circumventing Congress.
Can you imagine the FRAUD that will go along with this process?
Can you count even more people pouring into this country with fake documents in hand?
Do you trust ICE to proactively go after and monitor fraudulent documents?
Can you count millions?
So, who does this hurt the most? Young, black Americans.
Yup. Between this announcement and NO border security there is nothing to stop Mexico from emptying...
Vote for me and you'll be able to smoke pot at your brother and his gay illegal alien husband's wedding!"
The executive will always have a certain amount of prosecutorial discretion, but they can’t simply rewrite the law altogether. This is an abuse of power if there ever was one.
Of course, when Republicans in congress take them to court over this, the Dems will spend the rest of the election season accusing the “evil” Republicans of suing to deport poor Hispanic students. {sigh}
Next they will petition to allow the PARENTS of the said illegal children to also stay, because, of course, we just cannot be MEAN enough to separate families from their loved ones.
The dude is implenting amnesty, without regard to the law, without regard to any sort of vote from Congress.
Our nation will be overrun.
