The Soviet Commies outlawed the "Christmas Tree" until 1935, when they co-opted/relabeled the tradition, called them "New Year Trees" and installed them in schools, Pioneer clubs, etc..

In fact vintage decorations for USSR New Year Tree Decorations are sold on ebay: "vintage ussr new year tree"

I can easily see the Durham-Obama-Davis comrades with a Soviet New Year Tree. After all remember the Obamas decorated the White House Christmas Tree with the Mao ornament:
