There were thousands of people with power (financial or government power) who tried everything they could to keep their sons out of Vietnam. I doubt George Romney (as a state governor) was any different.
The only politicians who sent their sons off to war (like Gore and Kerry) did so for the express purpose of furthering their sons’ electability when they returned to the States. They all saw the JFK-PT109 model and decided to get them into the military yet somehow away from combat.

1 out of 16 babyboomer males saw combat in Vietnam. For every babyboomer killed in Vietnam, 10 committed a felony to avoid the draft. Was that generation against war, or personal participation? 80 percent of them supported the Gulf War.
