Northern Virginia Edge Could Be Pivotal for Obama
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 13, 2012 | Scott Conroy

For President Obama's organizational machine in Virginia, Tuesday's jam-packed statewide schedule was typical.

There was a voter registration drive outside a Bonnie Raitt concert in Charlottesville, an afternoon phone bank at the Hopewell library just south of Richmond, and a volunteer recruitment meeting at a private home in this distant suburb of Washington, D.C.

It's good to be the Imperial Capital under the Obama dynasty. Just a reminder I believe 7 of the 10 wealthiest counties in the US are in the DC metro area and the DC metro area has overtaken Silicon Valley as the highest income region in the country.

I was disappointed in NOVA last time around. Waves of Priuses with Obama stickers.

Of course, they buy the Prius to “feel” good, AND to use the HOV lanes on the Dulles Toll Road...

This time around, I don’t sense as strong of a current for Zero.

The founders did not want the residents of the capital city to vote for federal offices because they would end up voting for more government to make their city “propserous”.

The liberals have tinkered with that over the years giving DC 3 electoral votes and have been pushing for “statehood” to give DC 2 US Senators.

But because the DC suburbs have sprung up in the last 75 years that old rule that the people who live in the capital should not vote for federal offices should apply to Maryland and Virginia counties around Washington.

They shouldn’t be allowed to vote for President or Congress
because they have a vested interest in bigger government to maintain their “propserity” at the expense of the taxpayers in the rest of the country.

Fairfax County went for Kerry in 2004, the first time in 40 years that the county went for a Dem. The demographics of the county are rapidly changing. 30.8% of the residents are foreign born. And we have loads of government employees, federal and local, lobbyists, think tanks, etc.

The best we can hope for in NoVA is a 50/50 split, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Demography is destiny.

The GOP has done very well in NoVa since 2009. In Fact, the GOP picked up 5 seats in the Fairfax area. Does not bode well for 0bama.

What has happened in Virginia is statewide, not just in Northern Virginia. Yesterday's primary turnout was LOW ~ really LOW ~ so LOW it can hardly be said to have been a primary.

We went to our precinct in the afternoon to find that only 55 people had shown up. At that time we were 2% of the total statewide turnout.

It's the Spring Presidential Primary effect. Folks had been watching the debates among 10 potential candidates all registered with the RNC, and when it came time for our SUPER TUESDAY contribution, we only had 2 candidates ~ a loser, and a cheat.

Right, sure ~ then we had an historically record LOW turnout.

That set the stage for Republican interest in this year's race. It's LOW, real LOW, incredibly LOW ~ and when my precinct, which is one of the smaller ones in this state of 8 million people is 2% of the vote that tells you which way Virginia is going.

Blame this all on Bill Bolling. Blame it on Cantor now that he's backing Bolling. Blame it on Bolling,Cantor and Romney ~ they tolerate a lot of funny stuff, and then NO ONE SHOWS UP TO VOTE.

I've been telling you all this is a race to the bottom and Obama has a chance to win it in Virginia, and possibly nationally. Unless politics is fun, and sociable, and you get to feel like you are a meaningful voter NOBODY SHOWS UP.

Politics in Virginia is currently rather gray, listless, uneventful, and certainly there's no excitement to it.

The Mittbots are giving it away to Obama and his running dog lackeys.

They're obviously living large off of all the tax dollars sent to the DC metro area.

Romney has promised to cut fed gov salaries. How do you think that will go over in beltway area? Sadly, Nova will be voting for the kenyan. The GOP needs to offset those votes down state.

I live in Great Falls (oasis of conservatives in NOVA) but I work in Arlington “Liberal LaLa Land.” Very few 2012 Zero stickers this time. Last time around it seemed 9 out of 10 cars had a Zero sticker.

We have to win VA.

The demographics of NVA have changed dramatically over the last 40+ years particualrly inside the beltway. Of course we always hear how race doesn’t matter. Go figure...

The founders would probably want it that way if they were around today and the founders were “fighters.”

Realistically, if we can’t win VA, need CO and NV.

Visited there in April.

It was impressive how prosperous things are. You can really see the effect of the Fedgov. No wonder they are happy members of the Baraqqi coalition.

Looks nothing like the midwest.
Here every commercial building seems to have a big “for lease” or “available” sign on it.

McDonnell has endorsed Bolling. VA is now a purple state because of changing demographics, much of it due to immigration.

In 2010, the foreign born accounted for 20 to 30 percent of the total population in the jurisdictions of Alexandria, Arlington, London, Prince William, and Prince George; and about 14 percent in the District of Columbia. It is 30.3% in Fairfax County; 26.5% in Alexandria; 23.2% in Arlington; 22.1% in Loudon County; and 21.2% in Prince William County.

Which ones? Dick Black in the Senate. Who else is new? The Reps consider it a great victory if they get 50/50 in NoVA. McDonnell, Bolling, and Cuccinelli were able to achieve about that percentage, but 2009 was not a Presidential year. In 2012, NoVA will go Dem. The only question is by how much and whether we can offset Obama's victory margin in the rest of the state.

Redistricting has made Moran, Wolf, and Connolly stronger in their districts. All will win easily. The Dems dominate the Board of Supervisors, the school board, etc. Fairfax is becoming bluer and bluer. I say that having lived here for 33 years.
