North Dakota voters overwhelmingly decided Tuesday to let the state's flagship university dump a controversial Fighting Sioux nickname that sparked threats of NCAA sanctions, ending — at least temporarily — a dispute simmering for decades that divided sports fans, alumni and even tribes.
The matter boiled over seven years ago when the University of North Dakota was placed on a list of schools with American Indian nicknames that the NCAA deemed hostile and abusive. Those colleges were told to dump the names or risk penalties against their athletic teams.
Voters in Tuesday's North Dakota primary were being asked whether to uphold or reject the Legislature's repeal of a state law requiring the school to use the nickname and American Indian head logo. The vote sends the matter back to the state's Board of Higher Education, which is expected to retire the moniker and logo.

Makes sense to me. I think only white tribes, like the Vikings and Trojans are strong enough for sports nicknames. /s
I propose every American Indian-derived name used anywhere in the US be changed...
Every US Army helicopter type carries a US tribe name. How long before the Pentagon gets it in their head that they are ‘disrespecting’ tribal Americans and renames everything? Oh? It’s all about money in collegiate sports?! Silly me!
I suggest the name to be changed to “The fighting guys that go woo-woo-woo”
I propose they be called the Tolerant Inclusives. Their jerseys could be designed to look like they were all wearing sweater vests.
The Seminole tribe is actually on board with FSU. Its all about how you approach it.
At least 1 of the Lakota tribes supported the use of the the Sioux name by UND. Didn’t seem to matter to the nannies at the NCAA.

On the other hand, when Imperial Valley College wanted to change its mascot from the Arabs to the Desert Raiders following the terrorist attacks of 2001, liberals got upset and cried "racism!" and "intolerance!" IVC's teams are still the Arabs.

As a Minnesotan, who grew up in Bemidji, along the Mississippi river, I would be quite homeless. I wonder if that would qualify me to get a check from Obama?
