North Dakota Votes Against Abolishing Property Tax
By SUSANNA KIM | Good Morning America – 13 hrs ago

North Dakotans took their angst against property taxes to the polls today, an issue gaining traction in other parts of the U.S.

Voters ultimately rejected the constitutional amendment on Tuesday. However, a measure to change the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" logo and nickname did pass.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. central time on Tuesday.

Measure 2 proposed to eliminate North Dakota's property taxes, which amount to $812 million annually, retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year. If the measure had passed, the state would have been the first to eliminate local property taxes, the mainstay of cities and towns.

"People shouldn't have their homes held hostage," said Charlene Nelson, 52, chairwoman of the organized effort behind Measure 2, Empower the Taxpayer. "The state has more than enough revenue to pay for K through 12 education as well as government services without kicking people out of their homes."

Someone cheated. No one in their right mind except politicians would not vote to abolish property taxes.

I didn’t see any vote totals. I wonder how close it was.

Maybe the nickname should be changed to "Fighting Sissies" to match the courage of the legislators.

“No one in their right mind except politicians would not vote to abolish property taxes.”

Not true at all; here in NJ (where our property taxes are among the highest in the nation due to the public school teachers’ unions) we’ve had thousands of people laid off in Newark, Camden, Paterson, etc. because we HAVE property taxes instead of a centralized redistribution model (that North Dakota would have ended up with). Under the centralized system, the suburbs and rural areas would have lost the jobs (because they have less votes) while they’d still be paying into the urban cesspools. You would be amazed at how many members of the permanent underclass can be subsidized under the centralized system; with property taxes, they either pay up or do without police and fire protection.

I’d love to do away with all taxes, but that isn’t going to happen; until a better solution comes up (user fees or the like), local property taxes ensures the money is spent locally.

I’d like to see the male/female breakdown of those totals...

Local property taxes ensures that the money is wasted and used to grease the right palms locally...

See #5; I’m sure the people who voted to keep them knew exactly what they were doing. Here in NJ the permanent underclass would vote to abolish them (so they could have goodies paid for by other areas), while the hardworking people would want to keep them to prevent that from happening.

The issue is more complex than it seems; it wasn’t like North Dakota was eliminating any kind of spending. The spending would just be controlled at higher levels where taxpayers’ votes would be more diluted. People who pay no taxes should have no say in how tax revenues are spent; this doesn’t quite accomplish that, but property taxes provide a measure of protection.

As a NJ property tax payer, I hate them; until a better alternative comes along, I would vote to keep them.

Centralized taxes ensure that my money would be spent greasing palms in the nearest urban cesspool (where I don’t even get to vote on it).

Pick your poison; I’d rather be one vote of 40,000 than one vote of millions statewide. The money will be wasted either way.

Actually, I don’t see how you can even use the name “Dakota”, in any NCAA situation.

"No one in their right mind except politicians would not vote to abolish property taxes."

I disagree, completely. Property taxes are voted locally, they are paid locally (I brought cash over to the township hall this year), and they are often defeated locally. You can talk to your friends and neighbors about them. They also require a check for the full amount to be written by the payer. You know exactly how much they cost.

Once the state takes over paying them, you lose all track of the cost. You lose control, and you lose the ability to defeat them. I think ALL taxes should be paid by a check from the taxpayer annually.

If the state is flush with money, as North Dakota is, they should cut the state income, or sales taxes instead. The politicians don't lke that because THEY lose the control, not the taxpayers.

North D. has a long history of Socialist prairie populism.
The vote does not surprise me.

I expect this means North Dakota will be sending us another Democrat Senator in November.

>>>Actually, I don’t see how you can even use the name “Dakota”, in any NCAA situation.<<<

That is a great point.

‘Course there is the further absurdity of crushing North Dakota on this issue while allowing Florida State, Illinois and (even) Notre Dame to continue with their logos AND their mascots, the latter of which North Dakota does not have.

It failed overwhelmingly, and the lame ditching on the Indian mascot passed overwhelmingly.

Measure 2 is the tax thing, measure 4 is the Fighting Sioux thing

Very very lame. Booooooo.

I thought the same about the tax’ but I think there may be a sound reason behind it; but I don’t remember what.
