A lawsuit could follow after St. Anthony City Council voted 4-1 against proposal, citing land use and zoning.
St. Anthony City Council members on Tuesday rejected plans to locate an Islamic center in the basement of the former Medtronic headquarters off Old Hwy. 8.
The proposed Abu-Huraira Islamic Center had been on hold for months after some residents objected to the center and city leaders studied whether city zoning would support the facility.
About 150 people attended the Tuesday council meeting, where Muslim proponents asked the council to approve the nearly 15,000-square-foot center, which would be used for worship and assembly by the congregation of about 200.
"I'm a proud American. This is home. The center will serve the needs of our community," Sadik Warfa said. "I know this issue is very emotional for some people. We are a melting pot. We are all Americans."
Close to a dozen St. Anthony residents asked the council to deny the proposal, which they argued would reduce tax revenues, an argument Mayor Jerry Faust denied. Others contended the center would attract increased traffic in the neighborhood and create problems for those living nearby.
Some who spoke against the center made disparaging remarks about the Muslim faith, although Faust tried to discourage such remarks.
"Islam is evil. There's no other religion in the world that endorses violence," said John Murlowski, before Faust cut him off.
Supporters of the center expressed disappointment following the 4-1 decision.
Ali Garushi, a spokesman for the Islamic Center, said Muslim leaders will convene in the coming days and will consider filing a lawsuit to challenge the council's action.
"It's discrimination against Muslims," Garushi said. "This is a dirty war they've been doing."

Glad to hear of this decision. The proposed site is just a few miles from my home, and this is the first I’ve ever heard of this story...but that’s what FR is for. Thanks Hunton Peck.
True. Hopefully people keep whacking it with a broom. Then, when the camel get violent after continued rebukes, as this particular camel always does, people will whack it ‘more harshly’. Then call animal control and euthanize the damn thing.
What gets me, is that they often want to build their mosques and “islamic centers” in places with no appreciable Muslim population. Maybe not true in this case, because of the Somali population in Minnesota, but I’ve seen this in my area.
They will open up one of these places in a neighborhood or suburb where there is zero demand for it from the locals, and then the Muslims will commute from other areas to attend. Then, they need to open an Islamic daycare for the wee kids that they bring along. Then, a Halal grocer nearby so they can stock up before the ride home. Next, a restaurant/cafe/hookah bar for the men to hang out in and socialize after the official functions are over. Then, an Islamic bookstore, and a few import/export wholesalers, and other Muslim-owned businesses pop up. Pretty soon, you have a block or two around the Mosque dominated by Islamic businesses and Arabic language signage, and the local residents want to start getting out while the getting is good. Maybe they are “motivated sellers” and the home prices drop, making it easy for Muslim immigrants to snap up some houses.
Kind of like the “white flight” phenomenon, but I think they are pursuing this strategy intentionally, to take over neighborhoods for themselves with a minimum of time and effort.
Interesting. I don’t get to the Twin Cities a whole lot these days, but I think the main Somali residential area is in south Minneapolis. St. Anthony is north of the Mpls-St. Paul boundary. Don’t know what the ethnic makeup is there, though.

Good for them. Government has been telling churches where they can build or not build for years. Zoning laws and what not still apply.
That area is mainly older middle class.
I suspect their pull will be from North Minneapolis.

I’ve seen it documented in different places by different people, including muslims themselves, that that is exactly the strategy.
They know normal people do not want them near them, so one mosque pops up in the middle of normal people and they leave. It is 100% intentional, in your face and designed to provoke a negative response. Dhimmi libs then publicize the racist non muslims refusing to accept the newcomers and the muzzies milk it to death, getting laws passed to counter the discrimination.
Rinse and repeat in the next neighborhood/town/city.
WYou begin with their command to use our rules and laws against us, then simply follow the logical result. It corresponds perfectly to what they do. The only solution is to make it inhospitable for them to do so. Lots of pork products, alcohol and BBQs at places they want to invade.
And no cooperation at all. Let the media scream. Let them call you names. Organize and vote out ANY politician who directly or through underlings/appointees cooperates with muslims in any capacity. Do not patronize any business that cooperates with muslims.
If you are a business, make every effort to make their shopping experience a bad one. They’ll still buy there, but make them do it with the smell of Pork BBQ wafting through the air and lots of pork rinds at the checkout. Set up a speaker system and play music that offends them whenever one walks in the store or business. Simple to hit a play button. Put a big cross on your door and a “Coexist” sticker with the Crescent moon “C” covered with a “N”.
There’s a million little things to do. Once upon a time, Americans had enough guts to stand for their beliefs and do them. And when the Muzzies pitch a fit and the media shows up at yout door, look right into that camera with conviction and tell them that You do not cater to genocidal mainiacs whose ‘holy’ book says “Kill the Infidel wherever he is found. It’s unAmerican.”

There’s an “Islamic center” across the street. Hemmed in & not likely to expand, but they’ve already been told to knock off the predawn “Allahu akbar” chants over the PA.
Still, local muzzies are quiescent. This is South Carolina, where gun toting beer swilling Bible thumping rednecks predominate. That’s what we like them to think, anyway.

...AND, when Islamists are in Democratic Republics, the citizens of said countries are expected to conform to Islamic laws, customs, etc.

Well, music is evil in any capacity for them, but I think something by Slayer or even death metal in general will upset them greatly. On the other hand, may I suggest lots and lots of dogs (real, stuffed and on posters) along with lots of lawn ornament pigs? Put a TV in your business and play reruns of Loony Tunes Porky episodes.
Got a mayor or council that wants no part of muslim BS? Pass a resolution making a pig the town mascot and use the image on all tourism materials. Vote one in whether they want it or not.
Get official ‘companion animals’ and go to establishments with them when muslims are dining. Sit real close. Feed the pooch. Tell him what a good boy he is. I recommend Bassets. They slober a ton when they smell food. Shake their heads a lot too. Bummer if someone is near by.
Bumper sticker pigs. Stuffed pigs on the rear decks of cars. Pretty much just pick something they hate and saturate your neighborhood. Make a show of burying a few pork chops in everyone’s yard. ESPECIALLY where any mosques are planed.
The bottom line is that we have to be as offensive to them as their mosques and sharia are to us.
Childish? Who cares? this is our country, our customs, OUR RULES. To hell with the heathen bastards and their lib enablers in the MSM. The less they like, the more offended they are, the better it is for America. And if they take to violence, well, they were going to get to that one way or the other weren’t they? Yup, they were.
