When the steel claw of an excavator slashes into the berm of the Great Works Dam on Monday morning, it will mark the start of a multimillion-dollar project to allow endangered and dwindling species to return to their historic spawning grounds along Maine’s longest river, the Penobscot.
When the project is done - scheduled for 2015, after an additional dam is razed and another bypassed - it will open access to 1,000 miles of habitat for the native fish, including endangered Atlantic salmon and short-nosed sturgeon that journey from the Gulf of Maine to breed in the cold, fresh waters of the Penobscot. That is more than any dam removal and river restoration effort in the country, state and federal officials say.

If the dam isn’t needed, why keep it? Apparently its removal isn’t going to impair electricity, and will allow a restoration of things natural. What’s wrong with that?
I remember growing up in the general area, hearing about what used to be in the rivers that was long gone even way back then. I think it would be pretty kewl to have those species back so folks can enjoy renewed fishing!
I agree that environmentalwackos get carried away, and that Agenda 21 is bad for everybody, but getting carried away in the other direction isn’t any better either. There does have to be healthy balance, there’s no wrong in that.
Maine is an absolutely beautiful state and I find it refreshing that rivers are being cleaned up, and native species of fish and wildlife restored!
I remember the Merrimack River in Massachusetts when it smelled so bad it was sickening. It was nothing but a rusty oil slick and good for nothing. It was absolutely putrid, and ugly, trash filled and gross with dead birds and dead fish. It was good to see the improvements, and it was a joy to see people able to enjoy that river.
Why would anybody complain if we remove man made stuff that isn’t needed anymore, and restore good health? We ALL benefit from that. Now if they starve the man to save the bug...that’s gone too far!
Plus the stolen ATMs and cars at the old Duck Bridge in Lawrence.
However, they will eat everything that moves - any fish, ducklings, mice, snakes, etc.
Those trout and salmon you mention don't have a chance.

The entire job could be done in a few days....not years.
Can’t do that due to silt loading that would happen down river. The water has to be released a little at a time.
Pike are “non-native”? Does Canada count?
If the libs really want to remove dams, I say start with the Hetch Hetchy.
Of course, that won't happen. Libs are hypocrites. Simple as that.
