FR Exclsv: Italy's Oldest & 4th Largest Bank CUTS DEPOSITORS OFF - not a single News story.
Free Republic and nearly nowhere else ^ | June 12, 2012 | LITERALLY NONE

Posted on 06/12/2012 3:04:26 AM PDT by AAABEST

I don't often put stories in "breaking." I post vanities even less often. Hardly anything surprises me any longer, but I find this absolutely astounding. If you follow the financial threads or the situation in Europe, you really need to read this. Actually anyone with a bank account needs to read this.

I'm going to ask the mods to leave this here, unless they really feel I'm all wet here. I don't, however, believe I am. Follow me here.

BNI (Bank Network Investments) is Italy's oldest and forth largest bank. In other words, it's a biggie.

Anyway, the bank went into receivership last November. as of late last week, without any notice whatsoever to depositors, eureka, BNI suspends all payments and withdrawals. In other words the very first European bank goes on holiday. Furious depositors are left with no way to access their money or pay their bills. They will be on "holiday" (nice term btw) until at least July.

This is quite alarming in its own right on many levels. It's not, however, what is astounding. What's astounding is that there is a total media blackout. NOT A SINGLE ENGLISH SPEAKING ONLINE PERIODICAL MENTIONS THIS. Not one. Nobody. This happened last week, and we're going into Tuesday.

Don't believe me? Here is a Google News search of the terms "BNI" and "Italy" (no quotes).

LINK

Nothing. Zero, zilch, nada. Goose egg. Really?

The story is not a hoax, it was confirmed right here on FR at this thread. An astute FReeper, (Kartographer) picked up on it and worked the translation.

It's also on the bank's own website.

The only English speaking source I've been able to find it is right here on Kartographer's barely noticed FR thread, after which I found bits and pieces on a regular (not news) Google search at some other third rate websites.

Here is a site that has several stories on the matter translated from Italian.

Again, this went down last week, today is Tuesday.

ICBW, but I'm pretty sure that Glass Steagal went bye-bye with Gramm, Leach, Bliley-1999.

Am reading tea leaves, and not an expert. (imho) many (too many) countries are seeking methods to win as the dominoes start to tumble. The perceived solution at one time was to base all transactions on a global basis and eventually create blocks (as the Euro), the (unenacted) North American Trade Currency (rejected), and assorted other methods to hedge bets and equal out the value of currencies (worldwide). Currently, as dominoes begin to fall, (my guess) is countries (United States included) are seeking and utilizing cheap money from any source to continue without collapse. Will it work? I have no idea. One domino (Greece) is down. Two more are tilting (in Europe ... Spain and Italy). Germany is being hit extremely hard in the pocketbook to save the Euro, as are (imho) American taxpayers. To borrow more does not make my radar as a solution. Eventually payback is virtually no payback and nations begin to anger and then saber rattle. At that point ... options taken and words said devolve and the spiral down (or over the cliff) becomes eventually a point of no return. Leaders never listen to anyone with common sense (imho). The solution is to create the grand illusion normally, while (under the table) the dirt piles up till eventually the dirt is exposed. Then the blame game begins. The blame game is well underway, and those who hold the purse strings are making decisions. What decisions will be made and who will benefit is anyone guess. Wish I could be more specific, but like I said ‘am not an expert’.

I think this is more a sign of desperation among gold bugs than a crisis in the Italian banking sector.

Are their piles of actual yellow metal shrinking? Losing value in green toilet paper over the last 12 years? If you're talking about virtual, alleged, gutted by fees, re-hypothecated digital ETF gold or silver, owning that is just stupid for anybody but an Olympic quality day trader.

We heard about this from some women we know who were in Italy. The 4 conservative gals said it was scary, the one liberal said that it was nothing to worry about.

There was a trailer on the local Fox News yesterday morning and nothing else.

Google and other search sites showed nothing via my service or froze when I tried to find this story. I had a internet freeze on my computer about 40 minutes ago when I tried to search for this story.

I just got the following, and it is starting to appear on some of the other search sites:

http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2012/06/11/major-italian-bank-freezes-all-customer-accounts-143851/

‘Financial difficulties’ force Bank Network Investments SpA (BNI) to begin a Bank Of Italy authorized freeze on all customer accounts.

On May 31st Bank Network Investments discretely posted an announcement on their website that they would be freezing all of their customers accounts for 1 month freeze on citing financial difficulties.

The announcement was posted and the bank gave customers 7 days to act before the Bank of Italy approved freeze went into effect.

The bank’s customers are saying they were completely unaware of the notice being posted and are just now finding out about it when they go to the bank or the ATM for the first time.

The media certainly hasn’t reported on it and news of the freeze is only now starting to make its way around the internet after a complaint was posted on the popular Italian consumer rights website Adiconsum along with a photo of a shutdown ATM.

The freezing of the customer’s deposits, in a nation that apparently doesn’t have a mechanism like the FDIC to insure customer deposits against losses, has sent a shockwaves of terror across Italy raising fears that other customers will lose their deposits entirely.

In turn speculation is growing that other banks in Italy and across Europe may soon suffer the same fate as Europe officials announce they are planning ATM and Bank withdrawal restrictions to deal with a Greece exits from the Euro.

A Google News search shows no corporate news reports on the web.

A Google web search shows only a series of blogs and forums discussing the story that I am reporting on now.

ZaZoom reports: (auto translated from Italian)

Ok people watch, learn and start to at least think about what you would do if it spirals out of control and spreads. Think Credit-Anstalt, look it up. I am NOT SAYING take all your money out of a bank, stuff it in a mattress, fill your garage with MRE’s and sit in your basement with a SKS waiting for the “Zombies”. Its just that the board is set, the pieces are moving in place and the game is ready to start. Whether it plays out as some have hypothesized is anyones guess. Prudence and caution is the word of the day.

I have tried to talk to friends and acquaintances about what they would do if a bank “holiday” occurred. They either roll their eyes or their eyes glaze over and wonder when American idol comes on the TV. For a small preview look up what happened in Clayton County, GA when the EBT cards got screwed up and didn't get filled up as planned.

Newspapers need to report the news - not sit in 'great judgement' over what the little people can know or not know.

We're adults here - and can handle 'news'.

Editors in our large newspapers are totally aware of this story - and they've chosen NOT to run it. Why? Because they're puffed up with their own self importance - and oblivious to the job they're doing - or suppose to be doing - which is providing factual information to their customers. Thanks for the ping.

"What do you think the FDIC is? It’s the Federal government, IOW: taxpayers; us. Our government is flat broke now; how is it going to bail out millions of depositors with anything but absolutely worthless paper?"

So if the FDIC money will be worthless, any dollars tucked away in a matress will also be devalued, stocks are usually sucker bets without inside info, gold is already so high and I'm not sure a nation of people standing in FEMA soup lines will be interested in a pretty metal they can't eat... so what sugestions do you have?

For your esteemed consideration re: prepping.

Drug dealers.

Bear with me a minute.

These folks have intricate networks. They are able to transport their goods under the radar, and distribute it to a specialized clientele. They are well-armed, and have robust backup and warning systems. Cash is king.

Now, I’m not recommend we all start pal-ing around with these types, but just wondering what are the lessons we can learn?

The media is owned by the bankers, and controlled by the government. Any more questions?

“If the govt can’t collect taxes nor borrow new money to pay off old debt, it loses everything.”

What do you mean? The government of the US is not like the businesses you saw bankrupted in the 80’s. When it has debts it can’t pay, it just revs up the printing press and pays out the dollars. Just like other governments have done the world over that have their own currencies. The result is a devaluation of the currency, of course. But nobody comes in and repos the roads, bridges, rails, etc...
