Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush today said that both Ronald Reagan and his father, George H.W. Bush, would have a hard time getting nominated by the more conservative voters in today’s Republican Party.
“Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, as would my dad, they would have a hard time if you define the Republican party, and I don’t, as having an orthodoxy that doesn’t allow for disagreement, doesn’t allow for finding some common ground,” Bush said, according to Buzzfeed, which reported Bush’s giving the comments at the headquarters of Bloomberg LP in New York City.
Bush, a much-discussed contender to be Mitt Romney’s running mate, said he sees the ultra-conservative and partisan standards of today’s GOP as “disturbing,” but called “this dysfunction … temporary.”
“It’s just a different environment left and right,” Bush said.
During his “dad’s time and Ronald Reagan’s time,” Bush said, they “got a lot of stuff done with a lot of bipartisan support,” according to the report, adding that Reagan “would be criticized for doing the things that he did.”

Why are we not seeing Democrats saying that nothing can be done because the Democrats are unwilling to compromise?
Instead, buffoons from the right make these statements... playing right into the media narrative that it’s the political right that has a problem.
And yet, Mitt Romney is the presumptive nominee. Hardly makes your argument....

The only way Reagan would “lose out” in today’s GOP is because the Rove/Bush/GOP-e crowd would be backstabbing him and smearing him to their media buddies left and right. Reagan certainly had it rough enough in 1980, but if he were around now, he’d get the Palin-style treatment of big-time movie productions portraying him as mentally ill, books portraying him as a moral degenerate, and a media accusing him of inciting murder rampages.

You betcha, if the GOP continues to diss the TEA party, it will indeed become a ‘temporary dysfunction.’ The e-GOP is very close to going the way of the Whigs. The e-GOP might as well give up the charade and show themselves to be the big government liberals that they are. I despise them.

Reagan would not make it with the GOP power heads of today. Today’s GOP is far from grand and is one and the same as the RATS. The question should be could Reagan be elected by the US citizens and the answer is a resounding YES.

Bush41 was throwback to the days of the big government Republicans and there wasn't a dimes worth of difference between him and Clinton.
Methinks Jeb s "sour-graping" after deciding that he SHOULD have run for president (and would have lost in all the primaries!).
Knowing what we know about his dad, he is correct - we would NOT be clamoring for Bush 41 (the moderate) to run, just as CONSERVATIVES are NOT clamoring for Mittens to be nominated.
HOWEVER . . . . . . . the same is NOT true about Reagan. Reagan was a true conservative (thus the reason that so many of us would crawl across broken glass to vote for another Reagan!) and IS the type of candidate that we conservatives want. IMO, the only part of the statement that Jeb got partly right was that "the GOP" wouldn't want either Bush 41 or Reagan. The e-GOP would want Bush 41, the moderate, but wouldn't want Reagan (too conservative!). CONSERVATIVES wouldn't want Bush 41 (too moderate) and would want Reagan (are you paying attention Mittens and e-GOP?).
So, it boils down to what the meaning of "is" is. Is Jeb talking about the e-GOP (yes!) or is he talking about conservatives (former GOP)??
I was not in favor of the 1986 Amnesty. That being said, it did seek to address what was considered to be one million illegals that had accumulated over the prior thirty years.
Reagan was assured there were only about one million illegals in country when he pondered this bill. Eisenhower was president the last time immigration issues were addressed. That would mean that only about 33,000 or so illegals had been coming over the border each year.
Even so, Reagan viewed this as a problem that needed to be addressed. He did sign on to legalize one million illegals, but he also saw to it that new stiff sanctions were place on private businesses, that hired illegals. There were other preventative measures implemented as well.
What Reagan couldn’t control, was the enforcement future presidents would follow through with. After Reagan, our presidents essentially turned a blind eye to illegal immigration. Starting with the Elder Bush, he Clinton, Bush, and Obama have turned a blind eye to illegal immigration. Bush the ignorant (2), actually ran on a platform of Amnesty.
Reagan’s amnesty resulted in 3.5 million people being naturalized. He was clearly lied to, about the true magnitude of illegals in the nation. Today they say we have 10 million. They’ve been saying that since shortly after 2000, when we had nine million in country.
If we legalize today, we’ll have between 20 and 35 million illegal immigrants line up to official change the makeup of this nation forever.
I’m a little tired of watching Reagan get any of the blame for what is taking place with regard to illegal immigration. We knew what the arrests were in the early 90s. We knew the implications. We knew we were being over-run. Many of us were furious about it.
Rezgan didn’t sign on to this. There is no way Ronald Reagan would have stood by and watched our nation flooded with the citizens of other nations, illegally.
When Bush ran for office in 2000, he ran on a platform of amnesty (in part). When he did that, the number of illegals exploded, with our IRS capturing over 900,000 illegals in just nine months. Traditionally, the IRS acknowledges that it only stops only 10 to 20% of the flow. The dire implications of that, were crystal clear. Did our presidents do anything about it? Essentially no.
Going back to Reagan to discuss this matter, is evidence of a major jump over absolutely traitorous people who came along after him.
Reagan did his best to plug a small hole, and those who came along behind him did their best to unplug every bigger holes. They did it for political gain. I consider that criminal in nature. There’s a big difference in trying to fix a problem, and trying to unfix one.
Jeb is all wet and just goes to show how internationalists and their thinking have become entrenched in USA society. I don’t think Reagan would ever have thought let alone espouse that ‘a new world order’ is/was coming for the viability of the USA. Reagan, I knew of him as Gov. of California, was a true USA person even though I did not agree on somethings that happened when he was in office(s).
Why does Mrs. Bush think anybody gives a damn what he says??

I don’t think so. He authored a massive immigration bill, cooperated a lot with Tip O’Neill, and had a change of heart over abortion after signing it into legality as a governor of California in the late ‘60s.
I think many FReepers would call him a RINO were he around today, and that makes me sad.

His Momma runs the family,if we want to ask something we will ask her. Right now we don’t have anything we care to hear from her or Jeb.
