Leftist candidates led the first round of France's parliamentary elections Sunday, according to polling agencies and partial official results, in a vote that is crucial to President Francois Hollande's Socialist agenda.
Hollande needs leftists to take control of the lower house of parliament currently dominated by conservatives to carry out his plans to redirect France's economy, with repercussions around debt-laden Europe. Conservatives said the Socialists' spending plans could cripple France just as it and other European countries are being asked to rescue Spain.
Based on Sunday's first round, polling agencies predict that Socialists and other leftists will take a majority of the 577 seats in the National Assembly in the decisive second round June 17.
Four polling agencies' projections and early official results show diminished support for former President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative UMP party across the country. They show growing support for the left, amid anger at cost-cutting austerity measures and reforms under Sarkozy seen by some as too friendly to the rich.
"It's a good result tonight ... but we have to remain mobilized for the second round," said Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, an influential Socialist.
Socialists or other leftists were leading in 70 of 116 districts where the vote count was complete Sunday evening, according to official results. The Interior Ministry is releasing results gradually through the night, district by district.
The CSA and TNS-Sofres polling agencies predicted that leftists would take between 300 and 366 seats in the next parliament, and the conservatives between 210 and 270 seats.
Candidates of Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front party were projected to win between 13 percent and 14 percent of the vote in the first round.

Given the kind of economic turmoil hitting Europe, voting in the wrong parliament might well lead to it being dissolved within a few years. In all likelihood the left will probably level France’s economic foundations and face a major homegrown crisis at home.
I don’t particularly think the former President of France Sarkozy was not a good leader. He just kept too many leftovers from the leftist dominated political class around.
If he’d done more to relieve the population of France from the tax burden they were under as well as repeal laws that restricted freedom,he would have done himself a favor.
To be honest,Europe is effectively collapsing as of now.Any country that follows the left’s liberal views on reality and on spending is going to fall apart very shortly.
It is a very good thing though that this two bit of work DSK did not become the French President.
On a purely political level, forgetting DSK’s personal peccadillos, disgusting and criminal behavior, do you really thing François Hollande is better?
Two percent? That’s rather generous, isn’t it?
You should Washington’s Farewell Address. He says the same thing.
In that quote, taken out of context, de Gaulle was speaking not only of France, but of all nation states.
Front National is going to gift the PS victory here just like Marine Lepen and the centrist guy gifted the presidential victory to Hollande. Lepen says that the FN is neither leftist or rightist but her actions have made her the most far left person in France.
Aren’t foreign languages required courses in High School anymore?
Judging from the hundreds of members on the French Ping List, I think you would be surprised.
Besides, the graph posted speaks for itself and FReeper JerseyanExile was kind enough to provide us with an excellent translation.
From your tagline about choice being some kind of class warfare conspiracy scam of the “powerful”, I’m guessing you’re not big on studying Scripture. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
The FN is a nationalist socialist party, so it doesn’t fall into the traditional left/ right cleavage like we have in America.
Marine Le Pen is a statist, and IMO has much more in common with the Socialist/communist Left than with the tradition right in France that is traditional, free market, definitely capitalist, and supports individual initiative and smaller government.
MLP’s tacit support of the Socialist Hollande was a grudge match vengeance against Sarko and his party. Her goal is to destroy UMP and become THE party on the right in France. She will, and has allied with the devil to destroy her perceived opposition.
As the French say “on verra” we’ll see.
The French do not want the Greeks to have something that they can’t also have. Economic white flag coming soon!!!
The drug of free stuff is leading to national suicide, plus the coming chaos will provide a perfect opportunity for the Islamists to make a major drive to seize control of parts of France through the no go zones, turning them into autonomous regions.
The EU is doomed then. Because France is going to become a basket case “again”. As a result, France will do what France always does in such situation.
1. Cover it up
2. Spread the revolution around, because if they cannot do it, then no one else should, and they will dum down Europe around themselves.
How? Muslim immigration spigot will open up in France and they will flood like locusts Europe, and we will have an arab spring in Europe or around the Strasburg area. Mark my words.
Cars will burn.
There they go..doubling down on failure. The French, as do most Euros, have no clue as to what’s in store.
Just what — or who — do they believe will come riding in to the rescue once their reaffirmation of the welfare state brings the ruin that will most assuredly follow?
Looks like France will soon be joining the ranks of the bankrupt European nations (PIIGS > PFIIGS?)
Mais oius. Ce n’est certainement pas tres lisible.

Why not? Did we start trying it in 2008?
Very Orwellian...
There's the reason for today's DOW drop, right there.
“Socialists’ spending plans could cripple France just as it and other European countries are being asked to rescue Spain.”
So save the French economy enough by voting for the socialist “conservatives”, so it can bankrupt itself bailing out Spain, Greece, Italy....? or bankrupt it faster with a dose of French style communism?
