I know you live in that area. Please let us know how you and any other members in the Ruidoso-Alto-Capitan area are doing.

Thanks for the ping.

What a shame that so many communities have been wiped out. Those poor people.

Smokey the Bear was rescued from a wildfire in this area and is buried in the Smokey Bear Historical Park at Capitan:

Thanks for the info, C D.

My Dad had a World War II buddy who was a Ranger down there at that time.

Smokey the Bear

You got the name right. One more vote in the existential struggle to preserve the correct name of that fire-preventing beast.

I know this area fairly well.

We were out there a couple of summers ago and the fire danger was very high then.

Prayers up for all concerned.

I hate to see this, my ex-in-laws have a cabin in upper canyon.

Beautiful area, great people but there is only one way out. Heck it was just 4 years ago they were trapped up there for a week do to flooding.

I got the "preparatory evacuation" email yesterday, I hope most people evacuate but I know the diehards will stay.

Thanks Dave. I’m in good shape out at the gulch, and the place in town is OK (I assume... Haven’t actually been there, but so far there is nothing serious in Ruidoso Proper.).

I’ve been doing a little ‘blogging’ about the fire here:

I thought of making a short post in the NM forum yesterday... I guess I’ll do that now.
