Strauss is going down, and I hope it is hard...

Are you saying he won’t win the Speaker position or going down some other way?

Only when necessary.

It's absurd to even imagine that GWB had anything to do with any of this. The issue being discussed deals with the current legislature, which last I heard didn't include GWB! Connecting him to it makes you sound as stupid as Obama!

BTW, with all our in-state political problems we have every state in the Northeast beat hands down!

Is he related to Bob Straus and Annette Straus, both big time and long time Democrats?

I've never heard that he is related so I'm assuming he isn't. But, IMO, he's just as bad as old Bob!

Would you people who don't know what you're talking about stop with the Romney crap.

You all sound like broken records and this has nothing to do with Romney!

Get a life!

It seems to me that they’ve been co-opted by the hispanic caucus and, maybe GW had something to do with it.

You are one sick puppy! When facts don't suit you, just make crap up! You seem to have master the "art." You are full of it!!

Okay, then tell me why the GOP has gone over to supporting illegal aliens?

LOL. You are funny. This story is NOT about the legislature but the GOP platform at the convention. They are giving in to the hispanic caucus whether you agree or not. Why?

By the way, GW DID want spanish spoken all through the U.S.

Did you vote for a "new America"?

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. One of my observations about Texas politics, and by extension the present governor, is that decisions involving power to politics, which in most states would be low profile, in Texas ends up big and unsubtle, as in a plank in a party platform. This is a payoff to certain business sectors in the state that have provided large cash infusions to Rick Perry.

Texans here at Free Republic brag about conservatism in their state, but there is NOTHING conservative about this: aiding and abetting the violation of Federal Immigration laws in order to reap huge profits from encouraging, employing and protecting illegal aliens.

Texas tries to put up a good front. It’s like the rancher greeting you while on his front porch, shotgun in hand, claiming he’s doing everything he can to stop the invasion, meanwhile his back gate is wide open and the dog is chained.

You are talking about the platform and blaming GWB. If you didn't notice, the discussion is about Straus and his influence in the legislature

If I lived in Connecticutt, I'd be out trying to improve things in my own backyard instead of things in states I have no control over.

We are doing a lot better than you, as you know.

It isn't 2000 anymore and GWB isn't POTUS.

So...what do you think about Straus?

What ever happened to Tommy Craddick?

He is still serving his district in the house and doing it admirably IMHO.

He should still be speaker if you ask me.

If Straus gets elected speaker in the upcoming session there will be a political bloodbath in the next election cycle the likes of which few have ever seen.

I didn't blame Bush. I said it was possible that he influenced the platform. Are saying it's IMPOSSIBLE? If so, how?

If I lived in Connecticutt, I'd be out trying to improve things in my own backyard instead of things in states I have no control over.

Funny. How do know what I am doing? It never ceases to amaze how people from Texas think they know everything.

We are doing a lot better than you, as you know.

Perhaps. But we have enough humility so that even if we were doing better we wouldn't be acting like a child, "Nyaa, nyaa, nyaa, nyaa!"

It isn't 2000 anymore and GWB isn't POTUS.

Really? Are U Srius?

So...what do you think about Straus?

I don't give a fig about Straus. I want to know why the Texas GOP leadership is kowtowing to the illegal alien lobby. Straus is not the sole decision maker for the state GOP, is he?

A Romney-Obama ticket would not surprise me in the least.

Please do not hold your breath over that! We will need your vote in November.

Try looking at this link. When you imply others here are idiots you should check out what they’re talking about first. Especially as you claim on your persoanl page to be interested in being truly free, an impossibility when our laws are being trampled by greed and self interest.

I think he’ll be hard to beat with his power of appointment and the democrats with some 55 +- votes. Maybe it will cause a bloodbath and that wouldn’t be all bad.

I’m not a proponent of term limits but I’m slowly going in that direction. It seems the politicans view service as a lifelong career.

You are forgiven for the doublepost, but not for supporting the liberal Harvard Trial Lawyer over the conservative businessman David Dewhurst.

How was that again? "Conservative businessman"? "Liberal Harvard trial lawywer"?

I must inform you again that your concern is misdirected. You can believe or not what I’m about to tell you but the behind the scenes string pullers you are so worried about will NOT be pleased with this platform language. It is NOT what they wanted at all.

They very definitely DO want to see David Dewhurst in the U.S. Senate rather than Ted Cruz however.

Texas Speaker of the House Straus is not a RINO — he doesn’t rise that high ... Straus is just an out and out DEMOCRAT masquerading as a Republican... Texas Conservative Republicans have had the majority in the Texas House this past legislative session but Straus has BLOCKED 99% of everything Conservatives have tried to pass... Straus should become a delegate for obama
