Dunce Bill Maher: U.S. Is Fifth Worst in the World in Income Inequality

In this week's "How Dumb Is Bill Maher" segment, the Obama-supporting comedian actually said on HBO's Real Time Friday that the United States ranks fifth worst in the world in income inequality.

Actually, we rank 43rd (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Dunce Bill Maher: United States Is Fifth Worst in the World in Income Inequality

Shortly after the panel segment began Friday, Maher asked his guests, “How bad is income inequality going to get when unions disappear altogether?”

Michael Brendan Dougherty, the politics editor at Business Insider, replied, “It’s going to get much worse.”

“How could it get much worse?” asked Maher. “I mean, right now we’re fifth in the world, fifth worst in income inequality.”

Where did Maher get this figure?

Well, that's anybody's guess for according to the CIA's World Factbook, America currently ranks 43rd.

That puts us better at this statistic than over 30 percent of the nations ranked by the CIA.

Some notables with far worse income inequality include Thailand, Hong Kong, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, China, Peru, and Argentina.

So, once again, as he does virtually every time he's on television, Maher was not only wrong about something he arrogantly claimed as fact - he was dead wrong.

Keep up the bad work, Bill!

Wouldn’t it be easier to count the number of times mahar was right about anything? That was I wouldn’t need to move a muscle.

We should be more equal like...Haiti or the Congo.

Equal misery for everyone.

People are allowed to accomplish things for themselves and get ahead in the US, so of course there’s income inequality. We can fix that right away by holding everyone back and enforcing mediocrity.

Income inequality? How about taxpayer inequality? As in 50% in the wagon, 50% pulling the damn wagon.

“How bad is income inequality going to get when unions disappear altogether?”

It would have to go up, since, members would be able to keep their union dues.

Maher needs only to look in the mirror to see ‘income equality’ in the US.

I don’t see him giving any of his away or volunteering to pay higher taxes or contributing to the US Gummint general fund, or even giving to charities.

He did, however, pad 0bummer’s campaign with a million.

How generous of him.

I wonder what the quid pro quo for that is.

Please...don't refer to him as a comedian, that's a slam against a real one. Also, he is “little bill maher”, he does not deserve capital letters. The only value he has is the fact that he can be used as an example of how low a human being can go.

Let Bill Maher, mendacious ignoramus that he is, disgorge some of his own wealth to redress the alleged imbalance. I know a few worthy, hard-working people in straitened circumstances who would benefit greatly from a share of his largesse.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

The US is fifth in the world in income equality because we have a lot more wealthy people per capita....we do not tax the wealthy as much as most western nations do.

Most nations have income equality because they punish those who make money with high taxes

This story seems to presume that income equality is a good thing. If skills and work of two people are unequal but their income is equal then that pay equality is unjust. For example, should Bill Mahar get paid the same amount as commedians who are actually funny?
