ANNAPOLIS Organizers of a petition against Marylands same-sex marriage law have collected enough valid voter signatures to send the law to a November referendum, state election officials said Thursday.
The state Board of Elections announced that local elections boards have verified 70,039 signatures on the petition to force a statewide vote on the law exceeding the 55,736 signatures that were required to be turned in by June 30.
The Maryland Marriage Alliance has led the petition effort against the law, which was passed in February by the General Assembly. The group says it submitted more than 122,000 signatures last week to the state.
Were ecstatic that Marylands citizens are guaranteed the opportunity to vote on such a critical issue, said MMA Executive Director Derek McCoy, who added that the group will continue collecting signatures through the end of the month. Multiple thousands of people across the state are energized by this issue and want to see it go to referendum.
Local elections boards must still count the nearly 50,000 remaining signatures on the petition.
And they must start their review of the 28,000 signatures turned in by a group hoping to force a referendum on the states new congressional district map.
State officials say the petitions workload is virtually unprecedented in a state that has had just one successful referendum effort in the past 20 years, but that elections officials are up to the challenge.
Theres no question that its a lot of work and it will mean extra hours, said Mary Cramer Wagner, director of the state Board of Elections voter registration division. But the [local boards] will get it done.
Elections officials must count all of the marriage signatures by June 18 and all of the congressional redistricting signatures by June 20.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!
I’ve heard that in addition to Maryland, that Minnesota, Maine, and Washington state will also vote on the definition of marriage in November.
These are all liberal leaning states, so we’ll see.
Maryland, the most liberal state in the east, will give in. Faggots will flock to mary land in droves.
If the law is voted down, Maryland’s highest court will rule that voters had no right to vote on this topic. The court will throw out the plebecite and restore homo marriage.
MA hasn’t gone GOP in a presidential election since Reagan.
That's MD Maryland, not MA Massachusetts being talked about here. To which are you referring?
Sorry, senior moment.
MD/Maryland last went GOP in 1998.
Crap, futz again.. !988, not 98...
I should go to bed.
thanks for the catch.
I live in this liberal infested state, but I still don’t think that Maryland will vote to allow this. Carroll, Harford, Cecil, Fredrick, Washington Counties and all of the Eastern Shore will pole huge against same-sex marriage. I bet there is still enough in Balt Co to help out with this too.
And don’t forget the “African-American” voters in Baltimore City and Prince Georges County.
They may provide many votes for traditional marriage this November.
I hope you are right, but I am worried, as I know of many otherwise sensible people who view the referendum as “hateful”. The homos have done an excellent job in their propaganda campaign with many of the younger set, beginning with the Gen Xers.
Maryland is ranked 50th in personal freedoms. It’s a shxthole of a state in which I also live and wouldn’t if it wasn’t for the job I have.

If Minnesota prohibits homo "marriage," then the issue is just about dead. The next step, I'm convinced, is to introduce an amendment to the US Constitution to define marriage as one man/one woman. I think the votes are there for ratification.
I believe you. And despite the questionable polls showing blacks largely following Obama in to accepting counterfeit marriage, I believe that in the polling booth, they will revert to their true convictions.
Homosexuals want to destroy marriage because they are jealous of the happiness we heterosexuals can find in marriage if we work at it.
Marriage is the ultimate goal of the heterosexual lifestyle and homosexuals want to make it as insignificant as they can so they can make us as miserable as they are.
People who lack even a rudimentary understanding of language are the LAST ones who should be talking about “taking it back”.
Do you know what the prefix “homo” means? Obviously not, so here you go: it means “same”. So you’ve attempted to correct “same sex” to *another* term for “same sex”.
I’m as opposed to same sex marriage as the next guy, but seriously, let’s not spread our position through a message of ignorance. That’s a surefire way to perpetuate that favorite liberal stereotype that everyone who opposes same sex unions is some uneducated hick.
Oh and here’s some reading for you as well:
