NASCAR to salute NOSC sailors at Pocono
http://www.nascar.com/news/120607/lehigh-valley-sailors-honored-pocono/index.html
NASCAR will honor Lehigh Valley sailors representing the U.S. Navy Operational Support Center on Sunday at Pocono Raceway through an initiative called “Troops to the Track,” which invites active duty, wounded warriors, veterans and military families to races throughout the year for NASCAR-style VIP experiences. The program is part of the “NASCAR Unites — An American Salute” patriotic initiative involving the NASCAR community and fans during a six-week summer period between Memorial Day and Independence Day weekend to support U.S. military families.
This weekend, NASCAR will host 20 sailors and their families for a daylong interactive at-track experience, including a meet-and-greet with Sprint Cup Series drivers, special invitation and recognition at the drivers’ pre-race meeting, private tour of the Cup Series garage, pit-road access to witness the driver introductions/national anthem, and special seating in the grandstands.
NASCAR drivers also will be doing their part on the track, as three-time Cup champion Tony Stewart, as well as Paul Menard, 15th in points, will be adorning “An American Salute” paint schemes on their race cars. More on the patriotic initiative can be found at NASCAR.com/Unites.
Recent Hall of Fame selection Owens passes at 88
http://www.nascar.com/news/120607/cowens-obit-hall-of-famer/index.html
Cotton Owens, the Hall of Fame driver and car owner whom David Pearson referred to as his hero, has passed away just weeks after being selected to the 2013 class of the NASCAR shrine.
Winner of two NASCAR modified titles as a driver and a premier-series championship as a car owner, Everett “Cotton” Owens was 88. He had recently been in poor health, and was unable to attend the May 23 ceremony in downtown Charlotte where he was selected as one of the five members of the Hall of Fame to be inducted next year. He instead watched the ceremony on television back home in Spartanburg, S.C., surrounded by his children. His condition was exacerbated by the passing of his wife Dot, who died in April.
Owens passed away Thursday morning. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.

PULL
Come on Tony! Go get this one!...(at least don’t wreck yourself out of it by lap 9)
Is it true that around Pocono folks yell and scream, honk horns and fire guns day and night, just like the folks in Northern California behave, to scare the deer away?
That is a little overkill on the activity. But the deer population in the area is so heavy they do shoot guns in the woods the week of the race.
At least our deer are of the petit sizes not the Mule deer on steroids...
I saw a guy on Donnor last year that was going back to Oakland with a nice buck.
It was a 4 point Chihuahua, but across the hood of his Prius, it looked massive!
Have you ever seen seen a PrB after a close encounter with a Roosevelt Elk at Prairie Creek park on the 101...
I tempted to go off on some tangent about “size matters” and metro-sexual California, but since we’re visiting soon (Sonoma Race) and driving back up Hwy 101 I’ll hold my tongue.
Finished painting the next door house and it’s a good thing as there is a chance of SNOW tonight in Bend. Warm up is on the way but they’ve been saying that for 1 1/2 months.
Mark Martin fastest in practice. 4 Hendrick drivers in the top 13??Probably won’t catch qualifying as 2 months of neglected chores need attention.
I was just thinking about you as you haven’t been on the garden threads for awhile. Some pretty wild weather south east of you a couple of days ago...?
The gardening is not going well this year. I got lots started indoors this year. The dogs broke the two doggie doors that go out from the basement and chipmunks got in and ate everything. I have potatoes from last year to plant, but may have to buy from Walmart to get anything else big enough to produce before the first freeze. Also lots of pine trees killed by pine beetles. I still have about 7-8 trees infested last year that I need to cut up and solarize to kill the larvae before they hatch. Of course, being next to the Roosevelt National Forest does not help. I am currently getting about 15 trees a year that get killed by beetles. Luckily I have 100’s of trees on the property. I am on chain saw duty with a walkman radio during cautions so I can cut up trees with a beer in the other 3 hands and come back inside before green flags. The tornadoes don’t usually form over the mountains, but can easily form about 40 miles to the east over the plains.
I had to go to Colorado Springs today and drove through Castle Rock where a shopping center roof collapsed from 10 inches of hail in one of these storms. Everything was melted, but caused much trouble at the time.
Someone made a hard hat with dual stabilized cup/can holders. Radio Shack has a headphone radio that serves as hearing protectors unless your listening to satellite radio. Gotta get to bed as Saturdays are coffee and donut days with some young friends...
They won’t do an aerial spray for the beetles? Area’s around Bend hard hit by them and a forest ravaged by them is a fire waiting to happen.
Had a sage rat get under the house and chew it’s way into the garage last year. The amount of damage one of those things can cause is mind-boggling. How did you get rid of the chipmunks?
No snow last night and we’re supposed to be entering into a stretch of frost free nights. Itching to get my hands dirty which is why watching qualifying is down the priority list.
