Fullerton voters clean house, oust three council members

A recall campaign in Fullerton that was driven in part by the death of a homeless man who was beaten by police has ended with the removal of three City Council members from office.

The council members, targeted after the violent confrontation between police and Kelly Thomas, were ousted by a hefty margin in Tuesday's election.

Dick Jones, Don Bankhead and Pat McKinley, who came under fire for their perceived inaction after the death of Thomas, were each voted out by a nearly identical margin of close to 66%.

Once the results are certified, the ousted leaders will be replaced by Travis Kiger, a planning commissioner and blogger for the site Friends for Fullerton's Future; Greg Sebourn, a land surveyor; and attorney Doug Chaffee.

Kiger and Sebourn are small-government conservatives aligned with Tony Bushala, a local businessman and owner of the Fullerton's Future blog who largely funded the recall effort. Chaffee is a Democrat.

Sebourn said he hopes the new council will look not only at the issues in the police department but at fiscal issues, including the structure of public safety pensions and obligations left over from the now-defunct redevelopment agency.

A good start...

Yes. Now, if the newly-elected officials can re-engineer the entire police force to get rid of some "law enforcement" officers and hire some "Peace Officers", things might start to improve.

You dont know what the Fck you are talking about... I personally Know Don Bankhead. He is an amazing and honest man. These people exploited the death of a homeless man to gain power. The council could not comment on an active investigation... How could they? Geez... the cops should go down. Yes, but this was a huge mistake you will see.

I live in Fullerton and am making this post from the Fullerton library. My encounters with the local police have been both good and bad. They have come to my rescue a couple of times. But I have also encountered obnoxious and bullying officers.

At one encounter a cop, with no real reason, screamed and threatened me.

I wanted to report his behavior to the department but what had he really done, just yelled at me. Still he was totally unprofessional. In the end I kept quiet. Next time it happens I will report it.

Given the dangerous trouble they are having in that police department, you should probably file a report when they act unprofessional.

"He is an amazing and honest man"

And just like "amazing and honest" men everywhere, he was going to let two cops get away with murder.

Fine Man indeed.

The Tea Party is conservative and also interested in getting people in power who will respect the constitution.

So, you are going to see conservatives standing up to abusive police officers and nanny state controllers who will be running for office more and more.

I know they are not allowed to speak about the details of the investigation. But nothing stopped them from letting everyone know they were loaded for bear and upset about the video of the murder (with many witnesses).

Conservatives have to know when to go activist against government and police abuse and when to defend the cops against race baiters and leftists. (The communists will take advantage of the opportunity on behalf of criminals.) If they resist these kind of situations or give the cold shoulder to citizens without thinking, they are going to be in trouble.

Police academies, local and state departments and unions need to be reformed. The training has been nationalized and militarized by Homeland inSecurity. The world is their airport to sexually molest; they have dehumanized citizens nd ignored our Bill of Rights. We need to take care of the Feds, too. They named Americans the domestic terrorists in their war on terror and made it politically incorrect to focus on jihadists.

Your friend took it in the shorts for having power in the middle of this transition. I do feel bad for him and you.

You are an idiot.. He was chief of police for that city for years. You think he would cover that up? If you are on the city council and there is an active investigation going on against police officers that you basically have jurisdiction over as well as the liability of the city... do you shoot your mouth off before you know what happened? Go back to your crack pipe and leave the complex thoughts to others.

Good news.
