NBC's Mitchell: Queen Had to 'Put Up With' the 'Indignity' of Celebrating U.S. Bicentennial

As part of NBC's wall-to-wall Today show coverage of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II celebrating her Diamond Jubilee on Tuesday, chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell listed ways in which the United States has supposedly slighted the monarch over the years: "...she's put up with a lot from her former subjects. The indignity of going to where the revolution started, to celebrate the bicentennial of our independence from the monarchy."

Mitchell brought in BBC's Katy Kay to lecture the former colonies: "It's always stroke me as slightly ironic that you basically kicked us out just over a couple centuries ago in order to get rid of dynastic monarchy, but you probably have just as much affection for the Queen as the people of Great Britain do."

I was there in 1976 when she laid a wreath at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. I rated back then and the Secret Service knew me and allowed me to get as close as possible. I couldn't have been more than 10 feet away from her when she and Prince Philip descended the steps of the Memorial Ampitheater. Couldn't catch her eye, but Prince Philip looked right at me, smiled and nodded.

Mrs. Greenspan needs to retire. Her Majesty came for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestowne and received a great welcome from Virginians. I doubt Hew Majesty was moping about how all of this should be hers.

NBC’s Mitchell: Queen Had to ‘Put Up With’ the ‘Indignity’ of Celebrating U.S. Bicentennial

As did you and the other clueless, socialist-loving filth at NBC...

That was no indignity - it was a mutual celebration among friends. Britain and King George, by the early 1780’s, were ready to let America go - they had their own issues, financial, France, etc.

No, the real indignities are like some clown sending back to sender the official state gift of Winston Churchill’s bust, to name just one.

Before he became King in 1831, William IV, King George III grandson, was stationed in New York City and George Washington approved a plot to kidnap him.

Katy Kay, it’s like grandchildren: you can love them while they’re here, but you’re also happy that they don’t stay.

"...she's put up with a lot from her former subjects.

Queen Elizabeth II would no doubt be shocked to learn that Americans were ever her subjects.

Turns out if there was no US, the British would be speaking German today. So it was a good thing we did get our independence for their sake.

she's put up with a lot from her former subjects

In order for that statement to be true, SHE would have had to have been Queen in 1783.

George Washington approved a plot to kidnap him.

That's impressive, especially since Washington died in 1799, 32 years earlier.

He truly was a great man.

Andrea Mitchell is a freaking moron. Elizabeth didn’t seem to think it was an “indignity.” From her Bicentennial speech in America :

“It seems to me that Independence Day, the Fourth of July, should be celebrated as much in Britain as in America. Not in rejoicing at the separation of the American Colonies from the British Crown but in sincere gratitude to the Founding Fathers of this great Republic for having taught Britain a very valuable lesson......

“We learned to respect the right of others to govern themselves in their own ways. This was the outcome of experience learned the hard way in 1776. Without that great act in the cause of liberty performed in Independence Hall two hundred years ago, we could never have transformed an Empire into a Commonwealth!........

Today, to mark the 200th anniversary of that declaration, it gives me the greatest pleasure, on behalf of the British people, to present a new bell to the people of the United States of America. It comes from the same foundry as the Liberty Bell, but written on the side of the Bicentennial Bell are the words “Let Freedom Ring”.”

I am sure that Americans who lost relatives in WWI & WWII defending England enjoy hearing that.

It’s easy for us to like the Royals, we don’t have to pay for them.

Why is it that the left ALWAYS has to put down/insult our country? I don’t get it. The very freedoms they enjoy to spew their distasteful opinions are guaranteed by the actions of the UK’s former subjects.

What will they do when the socialist utopia they dream about comes to fruition and they cna no longer speak freely?

If there was no independent US, the Great War would have been the 1914 War.

During the American Insurrection, Midshipman Prince William Henry was stationed in New York.
