Panetta wants more US access to Vietnam harbor

CAM RANH BAY, VIETNAM (AP) — From the flight deck of the USNS Richard E. Byrd, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta could look out across Vietnam's Cam Ranh Bay towards the South China Sea.

A day after laying out details of the Pentagon's new focus on the Asia-Pacific region, Panetta used a visit to Vietnam to restate the United States' intent to help allies in the region develop and enforce maritime rights in the sea, a waterway largely claimed by China. And he reflected on the significance of the harbor, which represents both a painful past for the American military, and a challenging but hopeful future.

"The new defense strategy that we have put in place for the United States represents a number of key elements that will be tested in the Asia-Pacific region," Panetta told reporters gathered Sunday under a blazing sun on the deck of the cargo vessel. He said the U.S. would "work with our partners like Vietnam to be able to use harbors like this as we move our ships from our ports on the West Coast towards our stations here in the Pacific."

Cam Ranh Bay was a Soviet/Russian naval base from 1979 to 2002. Funny how things have changed.

Ask John Effin Kerry. He worked for the NVA.

One of the best natural harbors in the world. Fascinating to see from sea/air. One of the few things in VN worth a f. Shame we ever gave it up.

Men from those companies were killed and captured by the Japanese on Wake Island. Morris Knudsen and Brown & Root played an enormous role in winning WW2.

Whenever I see something `Made in Vietnam’, it goes back on the shelf or back up on the rack—it’s usually a garment.
The Vietnamese didn’t what our help, they sided with the Chicoms and Soviets and made war on us. Screw `em.

The U.S. (supposedly) went to war in Viet Nam to prevent the 'communist domino-theory' from taking over the Far East. Perhaps it was their oil and gas we wanted. Or, their other natural resources listed below which I have done a cut & paste from another web site:

"Vietnam’s primary coal resource, anthracite, is concentrated in Quang Ninh Province in the Northeast. It has potential recoverable reserves of 7-8 billion tons of which 600 million tons are shallow (within a depth of 100 meters). The country also has an abundance of other minerals, including bauxite, iron ore, copper, gold, precious stones, tin, chromate, apatite, and building materials such as granite, marble, clay, silica sand, and graphite."

Did I volunteer for, and spend 13 months there, so we could have their oil and gas, while we have plenty and don't drill for in our own country, because of politics? IT NOW APPEARS SO !!!!

Would I do it again? Probably, if I didn't know what I know now.

The movie Wake Island was about the M-K people, Jim McCleary was Harry Morrison's nephew and one of the few survivors of the Japanese POW camp on the island. He went on to be the President of M-K, before Bill Agee destroyed it.

I too feel your sediments. When they really open up their war room and give us back ALL of our MIA’s and POW’s I will be a little more receptive.

If true, this reserve would be quite valuable.
