One dead, seven injured in Eaton Centre shooting
One person is dead and seven injured after gunfire broke out in the Eaton Centre food court around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police say one of the victims is in life threatening condition and two are in critical condition. The other victims are said to have injuries related to trampling and pushing.
One of the victims is said to be a 13-year-old.
The interior search for the shooting suspect has ended and the suspect remains at large, said Const. Victor Kwong.
Police are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing security camera footage. The coroner and forensic investigation crews are also on site.
Multiple police crews are at the scene and a command post has been set up at Queen St. E. and Yonge St.
Shots were heard in the food court and near the Sport Chek store near the Dundas St. E. entrance at Yonge St. There was also a commotion at the Queen St. E. entrance.
A pregnant woman close to the shooting site, who police initially thought was injured, reportedly went into labour.
Bobby Umar was grabbing a quick meal with his wife, three-year-old son and one-year-old daughter when the shooting occurred.
Umars wife had just taken their daughter to a nearby washroom when he heard four or five loud shots fired in rapid succession.
I looked up and saw a guy, right in front of Szechuan (food stand) I pretty much grabbed my son and dove under the table, said Umar.
He was asking what was that noise and what we were doing under the table and why was everyone running so fast. I said there was a bad man and he was being naughty.
After about a minute, Umar saw the suspect fleeing southbound toward Queen St. E.
Food court employees directed shoppers toward an emergency exit which leads to Bell Trinity Square.
Umar said his son was scared and disoriented by the rush of bodies.
He was asking me questions all the way, and the more I didnt answer the more scared he got.
Umars wife was stuck inside the washroom. Security guards were instructing people to remain in the cubicle and to stand on top of the toilets.
They were eventually reunited at Yonge St. and Queen St. E.
She broke down crying. It was emotionally tense for her, too.
Subway service has resumed on the Yonge line but trains are currently bypassing Queen and Dundas stations.
The 501 Queen streetcar is diverting both ways at Church and King Sts. and Spadina Ave.
More to come.
It will probably be Jamacian blacks involved. Everybody else tends to kill people out of sight.
Isn’t Eaton owned by the same group that owns Macy’s?
Dive under the table or stand on top of the toilet? Decisions, Decisions...
Cubicles now have toilets?
Eatons department stores went bankrupt years ago. The mall named after the main anchor store kept the name only. Sears gobbled up the actual stores from the bankruptcy.
Can’t be.
Don’t they have very strict gun control in Canada?
Or maybe what I heard was GUM control!
Probably even stricter after this.
You don't think that Holder's goons were just doing the F&F dance just in Mexico, do you?
Scroll down on this page at the comments and you will read the following post from a witness:
“What I saw from 30ft. One shot, then looked up as he shot several shots in the air, then ran south. He was black. 20-30, light brown coat.”
Hard to argue with that.
From what you posted there, it looks like that article was quite unbiased and based on factual information instead of conjecture. My hat is off to the author and the media source for reporting the facts in a way that don’t bring BS politics into play.
American journalists (read that as propaganda artists) could learn a thing or two from that author.
Jamaican criminals are amongst the worst kind of criminals. They have absolutely no hesitation to kill you wherever you are.
My guess as well. The Amish commit a ton of crime up here justl like they do everywhere else.
I’m so glad nobody else was armed, or more people would of been hurt /s
Thirty years ago I visited Toronto , alone. Had a great time and felt soooo safe all the time, even on the subways at night. It was such a civilized city.
Guess times change.Uh, no..we are just going backwards in time to a thugish era.
This is the second gang banger shooting at the Eaton Centre in the past 7 years. On Boxing Day 2005, a 15 year old girl was killed when two groups of “youths” decided to settle a score outside the Eaton Centre in the middle of the busiest shopping day of the year (see link below). The Eaton Centre is the main draw in downtown Toronto. A 300 store multi-level mall, directly connected to two subway lines and a main streetcar line, and containing all the trendy clothing stores as well as a massive Sears. It would be similar to a daylight shooting in Times Square. They’ll catch the punk that did the, but we’ll be lucky if he spends 15 years behind bars.
They have strict everything control in Canada. Toronto is the most peaceful big city I’ve ever seen.
