Clinton in Arctic to see impact of climate change

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took a first hand look Saturday at the way a warming climate is changing the Arctic, opening a once frozen region to competition for vast oil reserves.

Experts here estimate the value of the Arctic's untapped oil alone -- not including natural gas and minerals -- at $900 trillion, making it a huge prize for the five countries that surround the Arctic if they can reach it.

Returning from a tour of the Arctic coastline aboard a Norwegian research trawler with scientists and government officials, Clinton told reporters that she learned "many of the predictions about warming in the Arctic are being surpassed by the actual data."

"That was not necessarily surprising but sobering," she said.

The United States wants to see that change managed by the Arctic Council, an advisory group composed of the Arctic's closest neighbours, even as other countries are drawn to the region for oil, gas and trade.

"A lot of countries will be looking at what will be a potential for exploration, as well as new sea lanes, and are increasingly expressing interest in the Arctic," Clinton said.

"We want the Arctic Council to remain the premier institution that deals with Arctic questions."

So "climate change" opens up vast new oil reserves. And this is bad how??????? These climate change zealots just amaze me.

Heavy ice could delay start of Shell Alaska’s Arctic drilling
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2888523/posts
Posted on Sun May 27

The heaviest polar ice in more than a decade could postpone the start of offshore oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean until the beginning of August, a delay of up to two weeks, Shell Alaska officials said.

Unveiling a newly refurbished ice-class rig that is poised to begin drilling two exploratory wells this summer in the Beaufort Sea, Shell executives said Friday that the unusually robust sea ice would further narrow what already is a tight window for operations. The company’s $4-billion program is designed to measure the extent of what could be the United States’ most important new inventory of oil and gas.

Sure, they take her up in June, right in the midst of the spring melt-off. They could’ve saved money and just taken her up to Yellowknife. “Look at these lakes. This is where the ice truckers were driving 4 months ago, but it’s all melting now. You’ve gotta help us!!!”

Of course, there’s not much room for an open bar and buffet tables in the cab of a truck, so I’m sure that a Norwegian “trawler” (read “luxury cruise boat” here) is more to their liking.

Typo ? It's got to be 'billion', right ?

Did the biatch take a look at that tiny, tiny, area of the ANWR barren coastal plain where drilling is requested?

This is a complete load of crap.

It is scientifically meaningless to take a boat to some coastline to look for evidence of global warming.

Wherever you are you see what is there. That tells you nothing about what was there before, or what may have caused any changes that have occurred.

(Artic Council)....it is an election year...Hillary and John McCain flew to Alaska together 'for' their campaign efforts...facts about the Arctic were shaky at best....who gets the oil and who gets to drill for it could be why Ms. SofS is going...again.

It’s the first part of June when the days are almost at the longest and in thr Artic that is when the Summer melt is at it’s fastest rate. I would be much more impressed if Clinton were to visit the Anartic next week to investigate “Global Frezzing” but then there would be no photo-Opt for lack of lighting.

“900 trillion” would be enough to provide 100% of USA usage for about 1000 years.
