How much of your local PO dept budget is devoted to going after criminals, rioters, thieves, rapists and mass murderers? It's the other activities that concern people. To answer your question, I would prefer drastically reducing the police forces and tell people they need to take care of themselves. If the police were so effective at doing the things you listed we wouldn't need so many. People, families and neighborhoods should be their own first line of defense. Our dependency on the police is propagated and then used against us

My department spends an inordinate amount of time and money harassing parents trying to pick their kids up at school. They do this at least once a month at each of the three schools my children attend. I think we need fewer cops if they can’t find something better to do.

What about an eighty year old couple - husband with cancer - are they able to 'take care of themselves'? Or a young mother with husband overseas - protecting the country - can she be expected to defend her young children without the ability to call 911?

In my neighborhood every home but three have security systems that charge monthly fees... We have crime watch. We don't get the police protection we pay for because the police are in minority neighborhoods... essentially babysitting...
I'd like homes to be charged for police protection. We pay our own water bills - not some city wide 'water average'. It should be the same for police usage. If a home uses police service, they pay more - tacked onto the electric bill. If they use ZERO police usage, they're NOT charged. Many advantages to the system...
