My son was getting an engaging lecture on all the non-lethal weapons the officer had, from bean bag guns to rubber bullets. I’d never seen this in open discussion before. The officers were humoring him, but I was getting afraid of my own town’s police - they’re militarizing and arming up.

What are they afraid of?

Police seem to have shifted from protecting good citizens from bad guys to all citizens as bad to varying degrees and bad guys as something to be treated gingerly in case of lawsuit.
So the law abiding are treated as probably guilty of something and always cash cows, while the truly lousy, crime ridden areas are mostly left alone unless it disturbs the peace of “civil” areas.
The police, perhaps, are now contemptuous of and distrustful of the taxpayers while avoiding or protecting the persistently criminal.

Everything and everyone. Cops are paid to assume the rest of us are the enemy, or will become the enemy.
