A Lancaster County man and two of his sons died after apparently drowning in a manure pit Wednesday at a Maryland farm where they were working.
The victims were identified as Glen W. Nolt, 48, and his sons, Kelvin R. Nolt, 18, and Cleason S. Nolt, 14, all of the 900 block of Goshen Mill Road in Peach Bottom.
The three were reported missing Wednesday night at a large dairy farm in Kennedyville, Md., which is between Elkton and Chestertown, on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Nolts came to the farm to work each day in the early afternoon, and were last seen between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a press release from the Maryland State Police.
When the three did not arrive home to milk their dairy cows Wednesday evening, family members became concerned and drove to the Maryland farm.
People there found a tractor and the victims' pickup truck, which was still running. The vehicles were parked near a 2-million-gallon septic pond filled will manure, where the three were believed to have been working, police said.
Evidence from the scene indicated the three may have been working with a pump at the manure pit. The victims came to the farm each day and pumped liquid manure into a tanker. The tanker transported the manure to a field, where it was spread as fertilizer.
The manure pit is 20 feet deep, with steep sloping sides.

“He and his wife, Debbie, had five children, ranging in age from 4 to the late 20s, in addition to the two teens who died in the accident.”
They were going to leave no man behind.

Yes, it would seem that with the truck left running, one of them went running for the rescue. Sad.
What a way to go.
So sad.
Prayers for the family.
The article says Mennonite.
/The family attended Bethel Mennonite Church. The younger son attended Bethel Mennonite School./
Mennonite. . .

Nolt is a Mennonite name.
An altogether tragic story here. God Bless this family in it’s entirety.
Used to live in Lancaster; and know these roads and farmlands. (A long time ago; but in returning; unlike certain areas of geographical commerce; not a ‘great’ deal of change.) Or so it would ‘appear’.
So it would appear. . .probably turned around and realized a family member in trouble. . .one; then two. . .
Really a challenge of Faith and mystery of the universe. As of late, however; looking at what is now rampant in our Universe; this almost seems more comprehensible by comparison to tragic backdrops.
Still - and not likely by accident - God has left a missing piece here, too.
By the time he got to the pit a few feet away, "They were all gone, except Phyillis."
Layman said he tried to pull the woman out of the pit but could not. She died, along with daughters Shayla, 11, and Christina, 9, and farmhand Amous Stoltzfus, 24.
The Showalters' two surviving daughters were being cared for by family members.
Yesterday, a cousin of Scott Showalter's questioned whether runoff from a pile of brewer's grain had accelerated the formation of the gas. Scott Showalter had been using the grain to feed his cattle. . .
OMG; even though; some 'antidote MO's could or should be in place. Maybe the 'historical MO of shoveling the manure is the better way; if there is no other 'acceptable' MO'- per Mennonites, religious requirements; perhaps - for this brutal task.
These stories painful and sad. Fortunately; we do not have to suffer the addition of any racism or 'hate' applied to the facts; of lives lost.
Had Trayvon been Mennonite. . .oh well. . .(George, would still be doing 'neighborhood watch/patrol. . .)
How God-awful - that pic.
Another reason to love where I live -
Such a waste.
Prayers.
Mennonites are less strict than Amish about sticking with the oldest technology, and might be more amenable (no pun intended) to mechanizing the manure handling if it is dangerous.
I can’t imagine a more revolting way to go. They’re hopefully in heaven now.
