WASHINGTON A quiet transformation is taking place in the Republican Party, which has begun to embrace openly gay candidates and among gay Republicans, who now feel more comfortable speaking out in a party that may have accepted them but didnt always show it.
While differences still exist, the party is on the cusp of a generational shift in which the longtime foes of gay rights are replaced by younger party leaders who are more accepting.
Its an exponential change from a few years ago, said former Republican Rep. Jim Kolbe. Its happening, and its going to continue to happen.
Kolbe, who represented the southeast corner of Arizona from 1985 to 2007, was one of only two openly gay Republicans ever to serve in Congress.
There are issues on which many gay Republicans differ with their party, not the least of which is same-sex marriage. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and other party leaders oppose it, and that stance is embedded in the partys platform. While they may have welcomed President Barack Obamas support of same-sex marriage last week, on other issues such as taxes, regulation and the size of government gay Republicans are as steadfast as any other party member.
There are only four openly gay members of Congress now, all Democrats. But that could change this year.
Youll elect at least one gay Republican for Congress this year, Kolbe said.
It might be Richard Tisei, a former Massachusetts state senator, whos campaigning on what he describes as the number one issue for gay voters and everyone else in the states 6th Congressional District, north of Boston.
In general, the campaign Im running on is based on the economy, he said.

I dont agree with the party platform, but that doesnt mean Im not a good Republican, Tisei said.
As far as I am concerned, people can shut their mouths when it regards their sexual behavior. Then it never has to be an issue.
When a person tries to force society to celebrate their sexual behavior, THEN it becomes an issue.
I have worked with homosexuals and counted them among my friends. They never discussed their inclinations with me to any great degree, and there was no animosity at all...so yes, we all CAN get along.

Socialism, right or left, a killer.

Socialism, right or left, a murder.
Hey, that’s a wide stance, not a quiet embrace!
A minority of GAYS ever consider being gay-married, let alone of Americans. This is a device to punk society.
AND I WANNA MARRY MY TOMCAT!!!
So we have a party that favors abortion, and favors homosexuality. And we have another party that favors abortion and favors homosexuality.
Wow, what a choice.
One of these parties is going to die. Here’s a hint - it’s not going to be Obama’s party.
Wow! You have perfectly described the “choice” for us created by the two parties.
Great post!
“AND I WANNA MARRY MY TOMCAT!!!”
Or, make it easy on yourself and just marry yourself...
Homosexuals are harmless people, and coming to a neighborhood near you....”Good Pedophiles” sponsored by another harmless homosexual, Dan Savage.
Their such sweet people.
Oh silly. There’s nothing like the tomcat.
First it was the chickification of America... now it’s the homofication of America.
chicks were not queer. but this is.
Kolbe was my Congressman when I was living in Tucson. Everyone knew he was gay, but he never admitted it publicly. So, the author is wrong in that Kolbe was not "openly gay" while in Congress.
Yup. Every state GOP that tried to co-opt the leftist agenda has either died or became a powerless minority. Remarkable that the state that was the paragon of leftist “values” in the GOP, the one that is about the most moribund, is the very state whose execrable former Governor is about to be coronated for President. He’s just licking his chops at the prospect of what he can do to screw the national party into total annihilation.
Homosexuals use political correctness like a Walther P38 to the back of the neck...
Unless the Lord of Hosts had left us a very small remnant(sperma)We would have become like Sodom, and would have been made like Gomorrah.” Romans 9:29 the Apostle Paul writing to “all in Rome, beloved of God,called to be saints(Romans1:7) and the Jew raised a Pharisee converted on the road to Damascus to persecute the followers of that Rabbi from Nazareth-who had been cursed by hanging him on a cross-Paul
reminds his audience of Isaiah. And I remind those who have eyes to see and ears to hear—what Paul said in Romans (chapter 1 verses 18-32) Those who do such things are worthy of death(as is written in Leviticus 20:13- and if I may remind also what is inscribed on our Liberty Bell -Leviticus XXV.X ) And those who take pleasure in them that do the same as Paul teaches.Romans 1:32
I have been saying for a long time that the Republican party is moving away from me and I would like to join a viable third party.
The Republican party is committing suicide.
I think the Hollywood progressives need to start showing two gay men having sex during prime time TV shows.
Let’s see how America reacts then.
That applies to this subject in more than one way.
A conservative homosexual wouldn’t push for gay marriage. If they talk about how proud they are of their deviance, as though there’s nothing wrong with it, and intend to push for gay marriage, count me out. Call me a bigot if you wish, but I just don’t believe a proud, unrepentant homosexual can be truly conservative. I don’t care what the psychiatrists say. Homosexuality is a disorder, and anyone who believes anal sodomy is normal, natural, and healthy is delusional. I’m not even getting into the sin nature of it. I’m talking nature, the natural order of things, and homosexuality ain’t it.
